15-second Taco Bell commercial that was pulled for offending vegetarians

Feb 1, 2013 By Abraham 28

This was going to be a Super Bowl commercial, but it offended too many people apparently.

Why did it offend people? Because the truth hurts…

    I’m a vegetarian, it didn’t offend me….

Seriously, as a society we need to get over this “I’m offended” by every little thing. Save it for the things in this world that truly are offensive.

  2. Pete says:

It is a cop out…. especially if they are the grocery store prepared ones…. if you do veggie it has to be fresh and multiple dips!

  3. CT says:

Interesting because this commercial has been running for a few weeks. Apparently there’s heightened sensitivity during the Super Bowl.

  4. bridgecross says:

I call manufactured outrage. The ad would never get noticed otherwise. Sneaky, Taco Bell, very sneaky.

  5. shudderette says:

I wasn’t offended by the commercial but I thought it was dumb. Nobody hates you for bringing veggies. And red bull doesn’t actually give you wings… it’s a commercial…

    1. MTM says:

Yes it’s dumb. People like veggies, and they’re a great thing to bring to a party. Tacos are yummy too. You don’t have to disparage a good (and healthy) food to promote something else. I think they realized that the stupidity of the ad theme would ultimately hurt their sales a bit.

  6. Jay says:

Vegetarians weren’t offended by this, a group that focuses on nutrition made a statement and pushed people to send tweets to taco bell. No one was offended, a non profit was just pushing the same agenda they do the other 51 weeks in the year. The only interesting part of the story is that taco bell actually pulled the ad.

  7. CtB says:

What the Deuce… why would Taco Bell care about Vegetarians in the first place? EVERYTHING ON THEIR MENU IS MEAT! …Conversly, as evident by the comments above, a good way to appeal t Meat-Eaters is to poke fun of Vegetarians. …Taco Bell should grow some gonads and just sell their goods to their target audience.

    1. Linda says:

Actually, their 7-layer burrito is vegetarian, and I have at least one vegetarian friend who doesn’t eat any other fast food besides that

  8. Anna says:

I’m a vegetarian, and I don’t understand why a vegetarian be offended by this. I would also lean towards the fact that taco bell probably came up with that to boost views, but that makes no sense to me, considering taco bell is one of the only vegetarian fast food places I can think of off the top of my head. (You can sub out any meat for refried beans)

  9. Mark says:

I doubt this was “pulled”. The price tag of a 15 second spot was too much for these guys and the better marketing strategy was to post it online and say it “offended” someone. It will get a lot of attention this way.
