3 reasons Target diapers are better than the more expensive brands (other than price).

1. They lay flat when unfolded.

2. Only the front has color. (Front and back are distinguishable in the dark.)

3. They stink less quickly.

Update 5/26/9: This post isn’t true anymore.

I would have thought the Target brand product was just the more expensive brand repackaged.

We’ll have to check this out.

  2. 2

    Oh, they’re definitely different.

And, from what I can tell, the same things that make them more inexpensive are what make them better.

    Chris says:

I agree that the more expensive diapers are not always the best.

My favorite were Luvs. They were much less expensive than the others and they never, ever leaked through both kids diaper years:)

I will be the lone voice of disagreement.

Here is why I don’t like them.

they don’t wick away the moisture as well
    as other brands.
less moisture control = sore red hineys for my kids

This cracked me up to have at the top of my feed reader this morning since someone gave me a package yesterday at church with a note explaining that they are the best. :)

    addendum:

just to make sure noone thinks i try to keep them on for 12 hours at a time.. no, i checked them as frequently as i checked other brands of diapers. They just did a number on the hineys in this house. ;) lol

    yes- Target diapers rock.

    Barnabas says:

Target diapers also leak less easily and often than more expensive brands.

Thank you, Abraham. My wife and I just had a conversation about this in the diaper aisle at Target. Ignorant first time parents that we are, we assumed that the private label diapers would be an inferior product. Ashamed of our elitism, we will try the Target brand posthaste.

Thanks for making the world (mine, at least) a better place.

    Tony says:

Barnabas-very true re: less leaking. That’s been one of reasons we’ve stuck with the Target brand. We had leaking issues with just about every other brand.

    Rachel says:

The comments about leaking are very interesting. We found the opposite to be true. We used Target diapers on our first three children, but had to switch with our youngest daughter. She started soaking through her diapers several times a day until we reluctantly switched to a more expensive brand.

I personally think that number 3 should have been number 1. (chuckle)
    Self preservation above all!

    Melissa says:

Question– do you find that they even work for the “up-and-out-the-front” little boy coverage? We’ve had to keep going back to (expensive!) Pampers for this reason, but haven’t tried Target yet.

  14. 14

They seem to work fine in that regard, Melissa.

In our house “point it down” is a mantra both during diaper changing and potty training.

  15. 15
    Kellie says:

I have to agree w/ Karen- I really wanted to go the cheap route but found I was changing them more often – b/c they got soaked easier and her bottom was sensitive.

My kids are teenagers now, but this thread brought back a lot of memories. Ah yes, when a good-fitting, inexpensive diaper was a really important thing. Now it’s appropriate movies (not many) and appropriate styles of clothing when leading worship. They grow up so fast, enjoy the diaper years, and don’t dread the teenage years, they are great, too.

Abraham, I’m dying laughing over this post. Have you joined the ranks of “mom blogs”? HAHAHA! Now when you start posting about baby wearing, we might have to have an intervention.

  18. 18

I’ve always wanted to be accepted into the ranks of mom blogs.

Abraham- your Target post couldn’t be more apropos with the announcement today that the new Twins ballpark is called Target Field.

    Paul Fuller says:

Just a little info on how generic diapers are manufactured: I worked for 7 years in the IT-Manufacturing department at Kimberly-Clark who makes Huggies-brand diapers. Target, Wal-mart, Costco, etc. provide specifications to Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Georgia Pacific, or whoever will provide the best deal to make their generic brand diaper (cost usually being the determining factor). The 3rd party makes the diapers then according to the retailer’s design specification and branding requirements. Sometimes they’ll work directly with the manufacturer to utilize that manufacturer’s patents. For instance, compare the patent #’s on the Target box with a box of Huggies or Pampers and you’ll often see the similarities which may or may not indicate which manufacturer actually produced the diaper. Just a little diaper trivia… more than you wanted to know, I’m sure!

  21. 21
    Deborah says:

I agree that they are great. I have had a couple problems with leaks, but I don’t think it would have been different with a more expensive kind. Some things you have to pay more for quality, these diapers are not one of them.

  22. 22
    Brian says:

Very fine, but what about chaffing? Any and all cheap(er) diapers we’ve tried have left us using a TON of Boudreaux’s or Desitin just to try to keep our baby’s bum from breaking open.

  23. 23
    Jerry says:

You folks have it easy today. Back when we had our children you either washed and dried the cloth diapers or purchased a diaper service.

In either case, you had to deal with a stinky diaper pail. Pee-whew!

  24. 24
    Heather says:

I love target diapers! Target by day, Huggies by night!

  25. 25
    Janine says:

Three reasons cloth diapers are better than either:

    1. You don’t have to fill up the landfills with them.

    2. Wash and reuse.

    3. Feel good knowing that you’re helping save God’s earth.

(that was twenty-two words…save for what’s down here.)

  26. 26
    Janine says:

I could have written twenty more reasons. Ever thought of cloth? It’s WAY easier than in the “olden days”.

    ;)

    Courtney says:

Has anyone tried the organic corn diapers they sell in Target?? We are due to have a baby in February and are in a bit of a pickle because apparently the gel in a diaper that makes it absorbent is also used by fire fighters because it doesn’t burn. Living in the country, all our trash gets burned. I’m wondering if the corn diapes burn more readily than the traditional diapers. If we can’t find something that’ll burn, I’m afraid I’ll be stuck with cloth and to be honest, that scares me. I hate laundry. With a passion. Especially poopy laundry.

    Maggie says:

I’ve never read 22 truer words. We were having dinner at a friend’s house last month and forgot diapers for our 7 month old. I put one of their Target diapers on Renee thinking that I’d change it again (because it couldn’t possibly hold as much peepee as Luvs) before putting her down for the evening. But I forgot. In the morning when I went to get her, my world was completely rocked! No leaks, no pilling, no rash, no nuthin’.

It’s the little things in life.

Good to hear they work well for boys, too.

    Tina says:

Wow, you rock.. a dad writing a post about the best diapers. I love it.

I have never tried Target brand as I have always been a big fan of White Cloud, which Wal Mart sells. I have never been able to find any cheaper and never had any problems with them… How much are the Target brand ones?

  30. 30
    robyn says:

These are the least expensive, aren’t they? My friend uses them and I was thinking of switching from my beloved Kirkland brand Costco ones, to the Target ones.

  31. 31
    Lindsey says:

Other great ones: Members’ Mark, sold at Sam’s Club. Looooove them.

  32. 32
    Kendra says:

I have to second some of the comments already posted that disagree, sorry! We definitely prefer Luvs and Huggies (coupons and sales make them the same price as Target brand!), especially for our girl, who’s diaper-area skin just can’t handle Target brand’s inferior wicking. She rashes so quickly in Target brand.

I’ve found that T.B. stink more. Poopy diapers smell like poopy diapers regardless of brand I think, but wet diapers….man, a wet T.B. smells like pee much more than other brands.

Newborn pee might not be as potent as toddler pee though :) Definitely less in quantity, so maybe that helps.

  33. 33

    Interesting, Kendra.

With our first kid, I developed the conspiracy theory that expensive diaper brands are made to stink right when the kid pees so you change them more often and buy more diapers.

But you’re saying that happens with Target more than others.

Maybe different children’s constitutions require different diapers.

  34. 34
    Ellie says:

We used the Kirkland ones, too, but that was a few years ago. I found that some diapers did fit some kids better than others. Wondered if it had anything to do with whether the kids were chubby and round babies or skinny and wiggly babies?

For Courtney – go borrow a few different used diapers and try burning them before you settle on one brand or another. Cheapest way to answer your question! We burned ours in our wood stove on occasions, and they seemed to burn just fine.

  35. 35
    Phoebe says:

This is a funny post, but I would also like to point out that cloth diapers are best as far as stink goes. We use cloth diapers, and when my little brothers have disposable ones on I often think the diapers are dirty when they are only wet. Wet cloth diapers don’t smell.

They also lie flat when unfolded!

They are much better for the environment.

And they are honestly not hard to clean.

  36. 36
    Kendra says:

Abraham–I do think that Pampers smell like pee pretty quickly (but not Huggies and Luvs). The absorbent stuff is different, and the outside lining is SUPER thin on Pampers. Funny that such a deep topic as diapers got so many responses! :)

It’s been so long since we’ve had Pampers in the house that I was automatically thinking only of Huggies and Luvs. We like Target better than Pampers, though, that’s for sure! I think Pampers has a conspiracy theory :) We can’t stand how they feel when wet (from the outside, like when you’re forming them into a ball to dispose of), how they droop terribly…

  37. 37
    Shannon says:

No one is probably reading this anymore, but…

I’m trying the Target diapers now and I’m totally switching back to Pampers after this. I’ve been less than impressed – leaky, poor coverage, and they don’t stay closed as well :(

  38. 38
    Rich says:

I got an offer last year to invest in a company that made bio-degradable diapers. They don’t “break down” when worn :) but they do break down in a few years rather than decades. The stats for the company said that every single disposable ever made is still in landfill somewhere. Crazy statistic for a disposable diaper guy like me to read!

    BTW Love the blog!!

    Sarah says:

I am a huge fan of Target diapers. My philosophy is that my kid is going to take a dump in it and I’m going to throw it away…Why would I spend lots of money on poop. Sometimes they do leak…so what…I have tons of clothes for my little guy, I change his clothes. The amount of money I save even makes up for if I have to change it more often (which I do not feel that I have to do). We go through 4 a day unless we have extra poops.

BUT, Target has recently changed their diapers…it is now the Up and Up brand. I’m trying to find out about this. I have used the new ones for just a couple of days and I think they are going to be okay but I really want to know the inside scoop on the new diapers…Anybody know?

  40. 40
    Steph says:

I have tried these new “up and up” diapers for my 22 month old. Seems to be doing just as well as the Costco brand we used to buy…was at Target and figured “why not?”. We only have a little longer left in diapers I hope and buying in major bulk does not appeal to me.

We’ve had some leakage issues but we had them with the others – it happens sometimes, right? They look cool at least…fun circles…very chic!

I’m trying to compare the prices, but so far I think Target’s brand is cheaper. I paid $10.99 for a big pack of size 5 diapers…can’t remember how many came but I’m pretty sure they are cheaper (or similar) than Kirkland Brand at Costco.

    Michelle I. says:

I’m a new mom and I was using the various Huggies brand diapers thinking they had to be the best and I always had coupons for them. But on my last trip to Target for baby staples, I was more concerned with making my dollar stretch. And after comparing the price of the Huggies with my coupon Target’s brand was still cheaper.

A few things I really like about them 1.they never smell like pee; 2. no plumber’s crack because of the little elastic across the back waistband; and 3. less leakage

  42. 42
    Kristen says:

    Steph and Sarah-
I just bought a new pack of “up & up”s they are still Target, but they are more expensive. It’s the same price as the previous box, but with less diapers (70 instead of 80).

I actually just wrote a post about it today:
    http://fitzhappens1040.blogspot.com/2009/05/disappointing-diapers.html

They seem to be working the same…so far.

    Valerie says:

Two of my 3 boys were in diapers at the same time (for about a year). I ended up in a trial of sorts. This company provided us with1 months worth of diapers, a different kind each week. We needed only to report back to them how they performed.

It was very easy to tell which of the top brands were which. I thought Huggies were the best back then, but after the trial I switched to Luvs because they were superior and cheaper by far. At that time the generic brand (couldn’t figure out which it was) was very inferior. I couldn’t even use all the ones they gave us.

As far as cloth goes, I tried them for a good 6 months on my second son (while I was pregnant with #3). My husband worked out of town during the week, so it was all up to me. I could not deal with the odor of the diapers or the diaper pail. I tried to do right by the environment but couldn’t deal with it. I threw up with every diaper change. I even switched to a service that did the cleaning for a while. But finally I switched back to disposable.

We are all unique – praise God – and I know I am very thankful for all of the choices and all of the improvements that make life a little simpler for us at each stage our kids are in.

And I am way over 22 word – sorry!
