but, like the sign I posted on my belly when I was two weeks over-due – “Yes, I am still pregnant, and don’t ask if I’ve had the baby yet!” – , I doubt it will work one hundred percent
I would also recommend a permanent sign like we have on our door, “Please do not ring the doorbell from 12:30-4:00. Children napping”
This has done wonders for our peace and quiet.
The kids don’t sleep the whole time, but that’s the general range of nap time.
My front doorbell doesn’t work, and I don’t hear them knocking on the door. Being out in the subsurb country they don’t come out there as far as I know. Very rarely! No need for me to post a note on the door.
I don’t answer the phone if I don’t know who that is on the caller ID. If I happened to accidently answer the phone (while I am waiting for the important call), and I know that they will ask for me by saying my real name, and I just tell them that I am deaf and have hard time understanding them on the phone. They will understand for that. This does work. It is true that I am deaf.
I don’t even pick up the phone anymore. I don’t have caller id so I just let the answer machine get it. At first this bugged family but if it is important enough to talk about all they have to do is start talking and I pick up.
Yesterday Barack called me. He was probably wanting to talk to about why his wife was calling me a few weeks ago. ;)
Fortunately we do not have to put up with the door to door people here in Brazil. However, the “sound cars” that constantly roam the streets during election time, incessantly blaring vapid campaign ditties more than make up for them.
The discussion encourages me to simply not answer the phone unless I recognize the number on caller ID. Have already 1 call in which the voice was so “robot-like” I talked over them about 30 seconds in and asked, “Is this a recording or a person?” She said, “It’s a person.” I said, “We’re voting. Goodbye.”
I have always felt that these calls/contacts are based on the premise that (1) we are completely in aware of what’s going on and (2) we have to be reminded to vote. Don’t care for either one. It’s my opinion that people falling in to EITHER of those categories should definitely not be encouraged to vote.
Too funny! I was mentally composing the note for MY front door just this morning. The piece of info you forgot is: Yes, we know our polling station.
funny!

I’m surprised, Abraham, that you didn’t make your note on the door 22 words!

Ellie, that’s so funny!
In the vein of Larry’s comment, wouldn’t it be fun to write a post where all the commenters were supposed to respond in 22 words?
A 22 word haiku
I took your advice, abraham. We have had people here already today and I know it will get worse in the next couple of days. thanks for the suggestion!

I’m just happy the door looks clean! Usually it’s smudged with hand and face prints.
What a charitable way to say ‘go away’ ! Great idea, Abraham! I think I’ll follow suit.

Somehow we’ve managed to avoid both the calls and the door-knockers thus far. One more day… just one more day…
That’s a beautiful picture of the door of an active American household.
I don’t know why I like that pic so much, but I do!
maybe it’s that it looks friendly and welcoming …
that sign in really funny! i saw that sign on your door from far away and was wondering what it was for!! good idea.
I think you’re missing an awesome evangelism opportunity.
I’m surprised so few people want to engage their neighbors in conversation — even if it is about politics. No hospitality here — go away!
