“Dear Sir/Madam,…” and “To whom it may concern…”: Former civility now just seems spammy.

Nowadays, it’s usually possible to research someone before contacting them.

Even minimal investigation may protect your correspondence from that ever-ready delete finger.

    Unfortunately, it does. I tend to look at the size of the message before deciding whether to delete it unread or give it a chance. If it’s 3KB or something… yeah, spam.

    I used to be a career counselor, and I always emphasized the need for personal salutations on cover letters and resumes.
