What words do you say too much?
Like this post?
I regularly resort to vocabulary I personally overuse.
Some of my tired exclamations are ridiculous, absolutely, and sure.
What about for you?

I regularly resort to vocabulary I personally overuse.
Some of my tired exclamations are ridiculous, absolutely, and sure.
What about for you?

Also:
adorable
I use the words “awesome,” “completely,” and “ridiculous” all the time.
All together now: “Words are awesome, but unregulated use of some of them can sound completely ridiculous.”
“Like.” It really annoys me every time I hear myself say it, but it still happens a lot.
Swearwords to one side,
“poop”, “lame”, “cool”, “sweet”
“seriously”
my wife and I both overuse this form of agreement
“definitely” and “absolutely.” “Absolutely” is usually followed with “NOT” to tell my kids what they can’t do this time.
“Duuudde!!”
According to my 2-year-old, “Oh, WOW!” Although I think it was for his sake that I started saying it in the first place.
“Absolutely” has to be one of the words I have begun to overuse. I’ve also become overly fond of the word “phenomenal” and the term “in terms of.” Thanks for the reminder lol
“like”
“You’ve got to be kdding me”
“Ohhh Brother”
-”like”
-”intense” not “in tents”, though they are sometimes confused.
-”interesting”
Wow.
Unreal.
Redonkulous.
“OK” as an interjection.
i’m a physical therapist (ie: i hurt people for their own good…and for money), and i find myself saying, “i’m sorry” some 150 times per day. sometimes i wish i had some sort of ‘i’m sorry’ shock collar.
“unreal”
Awesome and Greatest – “that is awesome” or “this song is the greatest”…
“Awesome.”
“Not gonna lie…”
Any sentence can be started with well. Apparently always slips out. I also use “in my personal opinion”. One of oxford’s top ten most annoying phrases.
solid, cheese, really
“If you ever meet a an adverb, kill it.”
I say “totally” and other adverbs far too much.
“oh man” or just “man” for short.
Absolutely.
Know what I mean?
Make sense?
Sweet
Fisticuffs.
amazing
I say “you know what I mean?” SO often!
I did a practicum placement in a grade 7 class and THE WORD of the year was “random”, as in “she is like the RANDOMEST person EVER!!!”, and “that was like SO RANDOM!!!”
I’m *ashamed* to admit this has entered my vocabulary… I figure it’s a side effect of teaching! :P
“Dude” & “Holy Cow”
“Opprobrium”
I teach high school…
I wish I could say that i said “fisticuffs” EVER! I might just have to add that one. Also, I learned a new word, “opprobrium”.
I use the word “so” at the end of my sentences all the time. I’m aware of it, but I’m having a hard time breaking that habit.
“out of control”
Typically, I find myself using three words in this comment ridiculously too much. It’s really unbelievable how much I use them…
Typically, I misuse html tags in blog comments. I don’t understand those ridiculous things. unbelievable…
“literally” – especially considering the fact I rarely use it correctly. I often use statements like, “That was literally the best dinner ever.” How could I possibly know that?
“just”
“really”
Definitely.
“the reality is”, or “the bottom line is”, “whatever”
Absolutely.
You betcha!
Interesting.
skrilla, t h r i l l, paradigm, essence, etc., exegesis, and a ton of other words that reflect an odd mixture between slang and seminary jargon
way too many. think of every bad california speech cliche, and i’m probably guilty, from “like” and “dude” to “seriously” and “for reals.” maybe i do it to assert my sociolinguistic identity subconsciously.
“actually”
And my kids have now picked it up.
I wonder … was “personally” in your post another example? Because I don’t know if you noticed, but it was actually redundant.
like I said, adverbs should die.
Are you sure? This sounds ridiculous, and I am absolutely sure.
besides swearing too much, I say the word “sucks” more than I should.
crazy. awesome. for real. (the last one is so lame; I don’t know when/why/where I picked it up, but I now regret it).
Totally!
Frankly.
“That’s funny.”
Usually said with a straight face, of something shared that is mildly amusing, but not hilarious enough to laugh about.
Oh, and as a parent:
No.
Don’t.
Stop.
Shhh.
Really. Amazing. Well…
“You know”–as in, “You know, I’ve been thinking about, you know, buying this book but, you know…”
Whatever
I can’t take anymore (to the kids, who don’t change and I still take it :( )
I’m a youthworker, which helps. Getting young people to do an impression of me generally exposes any areas of my vocab that need a bit of a rest.
ok? (as in, is that ok with you? or does that sound ok? or yes that’s fine–I use it a lot), yeah, sure, really (as in, that would really help or really? (after someone tells me a story or something)
- cool
- wow
As in when my boss shared a sad story about a difficult family situation in our church — I responded: “Cool.” — my default response noting that I’m listening. Uh, not so cool.
absolutely… everytime I agree with someone I feel the need to say, “Absolutely.”
“like”
“Holla!”
“umm…”
I think that’s it. :D
Seriously.
No.
Just a minute.
Okay. (waaay too much. My four-year old is starting to pick up on it)
Duuuuuuuude.
I.
bigtime!…but can it really be overused?
“Word”
Yes I said, Word…
fabulous
like
“i know, right?”
okay
for real
I say “Ya know?” because I want to know if I’m communicating clearly. Ya know?
I surely say “I” too much too.
Usually the overused words are in phrases no one else uses like “sad day” and “oh my soul!” Although I am especially fond of the word “clever” and I do find myself saying it whenever I get the chance.
really?
actually
that’s classic or that’s quality
silly goose
incredible (even if it’s not…)
absolutely
so…. (as a filler, usually trailing off at the end of a sentence.)
And, having teenagers, I’ve picked up ‘random’. I’m not sure what the value of being ‘so random’ is, but it’s obviously pretty cool.
“Class!”
Sheesh!
Oh boy
For real?
Cool!
Are you serious?
Oh wow….I am such a cliche! LOL
“all right”
“actually”
“like”
“seriously”
hi “there” (is the there really necessary? hi THERE as opposed to hi HERE? this drives me crazy, but I … can’t… stop)
I say “ouch!” cause I’m always hurting myself.
ben used to say “frankly” too much but I helped him get over that one.
“seriously” and, ironically “just kidding”
Many times, I was called “just-kidding-jenna” by my parents…it drove them nuts….seriously…
Just. It cheapens whatever follows… ex: “could you just pray for me” a.k.a “I know it doesn’t do much, but could you pray for me.”
Or, “I just watched Chuck Norris movies all weekend.” A.K.A. “I know it’s a waste of time, but I watched Chuck Norris movies all weekend.” Ouch… that was perhaps the most painful sentence I’ve ever had to write… such a lie.
Great topic. I have often catagorized my friends by their “sayings,” those that they say all the time. For example, “c’mon, “or “I won’t lie to you,” or “really?.” I find that I use “interesting” too much and “do you know what I mean?” I also love the word groovey and my 12 yr old alwys coughs and says …what? she hates that word…totally!
“just kidding”
“super” as an adverb; as in, “That was a super great book!” or “I hope you have a super spectacular day!”
also, any 1st person singular pronoun
I always say “What?” Even when I’ve actually heard what the person said. Really dumb. I think it just gives me an extra couple of seconds to decide how to respond.
Fantastic!
I’m a member of “absolutely” anonymous!
Currently, “super” Though, my overused words and phrases tend to unintentionally phase themselves out and new ones circulate into use.
I’m glad to find I’m not the only person who ends sentences with so.
For crying out loud (what does that even mean?)
And since I am from ND…I do a lot of “oh, for ________” (ie. cute, funny, etc.) which by the way, your wife loves to tease me about:-)
“Clearly”
“Evidently”
“Not at all”
“Fantastic”
“Awesome”
‘Opprobrium’ is my favorite answer so far. The rest of us who simply overuse intensifying adverbial modifiers are not nearly as interesting.
“No Kidding”
“Awesome”
“Brilliant”
“Talk Soon”
“See:”. Replete with colon.
cool
wow
awesome
right
and schizophrenic
