What words do you say too much?

I regularly resort to vocabulary I personally overuse.

Some of my tired exclamations are ridiculous, absolutely, and sure.

What about for you?

I use the words “awesome,” “completely,” and “ridiculous” all the time.

“Absolutely” has to be one of the words I have begun to overuse. I’ve also become overly fond of the word “phenomenal” and the term “in terms of.” Thanks for the reminder lol

I say “you know what I mean?” SO often!

I did a practicum placement in a grade 7 class and THE WORD of the year was “random”, as in “she is like the RANDOMEST person EVER!!!”, and “that was like SO RANDOM!!!”

I’m *ashamed* to admit this has entered my vocabulary… I figure it’s a side effect of teaching! :P

    “really”

  38. 38
    carissa says:

way too many. think of every bad california speech cliche, and i’m probably guilty, from “like” and “dude” to “seriously” and “for reals.” maybe i do it to assert my sociolinguistic identity subconsciously.

  39. 39
    Myrddin says:

    “actually”

And my kids have now picked it up.

I wonder … was “personally” in your post another example? Because I don’t know if you noticed, but it was actually redundant.

like I said, adverbs should die.

    Jeff says:

    - cool
    - wow

As in when my boss shared a sad story about a difficult family situation in our church — I responded: “Cool.” — my default response noting that I’m listening. Uh, not so cool.

  54. 54

absolutely… everytime I agree with someone I feel the need to say, “Absolutely.”

  55. 55

  68. 68
    Richelle says:

    “all right”

Many times, I was called “just-kidding-jenna” by my parents…it drove them nuts….seriously…

  72. 72
    Luke Mc says:

Just. It cheapens whatever follows… ex: “could you just pray for me” a.k.a “I know it doesn’t do much, but could you pray for me.”

Or, “I just watched Chuck Norris movies all weekend.” A.K.A. “I know it’s a waste of time, but I watched Chuck Norris movies all weekend.” Ouch… that was perhaps the most painful sentence I’ve ever had to write… such a lie.

  73. 73
    Tracey says:

Great topic. I have often catagorized my friends by their “sayings,” those that they say all the time. For example, “c’mon, “or “I won’t lie to you,” or “really?.” I find that I use “interesting” too much and “do you know what I mean?” I also love the word groovey and my 12 yr old alwys coughs and says …what? she hates that word…totally!

  74. 74
    Stephanie G. says:

    “just kidding”
“super” as an adverb; as in, “That was a super great book!” or “I hope you have a super spectacular day!”
also, any 1st person singular pronoun

  75. 75
    Maggie says:

I always say “What?” Even when I’ve actually heard what the person said. Really dumb. I think it just gives me an extra couple of seconds to decide how to respond.

  76. 76
  77. 77
    Beth says:

I’m a member of “absolutely” anonymous!

  78. 78
    Annie says:

Currently, “super” Though, my overused words and phrases tend to unintentionally phase themselves out and new ones circulate into use.

I’m glad to find I’m not the only person who ends sentences with so.

  79. 79
    Shannon Archer says:

For crying out loud (what does that even mean?)

    “Not at all”
    “Fantastic”
    “Awesome”
