It sounds good.... but I think it might be a bit too bitter for my taste, with the white of the peel and all. I would probably grate the zest and then peel the orange. Otherwise, sounds lovely!

I would love to try one of the many cranberry recipes I have seen, but my family would balk. They like the canned stuff.

My mom is an excellent cook and yet we always just ate the canned stuff. When I got older I tried my hand at the fancy stuff but my husband and I ended up preferring the canned stuff. You know, the stuff that comes out looking like a can?

that sounds extremely delicious. i'm unsentimental, though - most people i know have a great affection for the canned stuff. in the shape of the can, with the ridges still imprinted on the gelatinous mass. that's cool too.

I was a guest at the Piper home for Thanksgiving 2004. Soon after I queried a friend who I tagged along with to see if he could fetch me the recipe. No response. After years of waiting its finally here.

Hi Abraham,
I have never been to this site before but a friend knew I was searching for that orange/cranberry Thanksgiving thing I had a few years ago. I think this might be it. What an unusual place to find what I'm looking for!
Thanks for this timely post.

the canned and the relish taste especially fine on a (leftover) turkey sandwich.

This recipe via my stepmother-in-law makes a non-lover of cranberry 'gelatin' into a major lover of cranberry salad..

1 can ocean spray whole cranberry sauce
1 small box raspberry jello
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped granny smith apples
1 cup chopped walnuts

Add 1 cup boiling water to jello and stir until dissolved, allow to cool 15 minutes. While jello is cooling coarsly mash cranberry gelatin. (A potato masher works very well) Add jello to cranberry gelatin, stirring until combined. Add celery, apples, walnuts, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 12 hours.

Happy Thanksgiving!

have you been reading (counting words in) your mom's recipe book lately?

I mean, not that it matters; I like benefitting from it. We are making homemade Eggnog tomorrow night--NP style.

Ahh, cranberries! My favorite part of the meal besides the turkey. I'll eat it canned, fresh, homemade, chutney, compote, preserves, marmalade, whatever. I'll even eat fresh berries straight out of the package!

Here's my recipe for Orange-Ginger Cranberries:

1 large bag of cranberries (about a pound)
1/2 can orange juice
2-3 large pieces of candied ginger, diced finely
1 large package orange Jello
1-2 cups brown sugar (sweeten to preference)
liberal dash of pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp kosher or sea salt

Toss cranberries, sugar, orange juice, pie spice and salt into saucepan with enough water to cover, and simmer over medium heat until berries pop. Add diced ginger, continue to simmer until ginger is soft. Add Jello and mix until completely dissolved. Cool in fridge.

If you have leftover sauce, try straining it to remove the skins, adding a half-can of evaporated milk, and throwing it into your ice cream maker for a whirl. Makes a YUMMY sherbet!

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all! May God continue to bless you and all your wonderful family!
