Who knew the real power behind the emergent church!
Like this post?
Usually when someone starts discussing the emergent church—positively or negatively—I ignore them for a fortnight just for good measure.
But…

Woohoo! First comment… and all I can say is “lol”
Great.
“what about all our made up words?”
priceless.

oh my funny.
My vote for best line.
“It’s okay, we don’t believe in absolutes.”
“That place in winter is worse than Stalingrad!” LOL
I have to agree with the Minnesota winter comments.
What is it with Minnesotans?
Brilliant
it’s not ell-oh-ell funny, but it’s definitely smirk-and-quote-it-later-funny.
Abraham, thanks for the plug. I did manage to work your dad into the video, although I think he might grimace and shake his head upon seeing it.
It’s been great to see the emergents get a chuckle as well, despite seeing me as “an enemy.”
And Larry Norman posting from beyond the grave–that’s pretty cool. I love “Only Visiting This Planet!”
Thanks again,
Randy
Best line: “It’s ok. We don’t believe in absolutes.”
What’s funny is I saw this exact same clip the other day dubbed with stuff about the sub-prime mortgage crisis.
@ Randy.
Sadly I have musically nothing in common with “Only Visiting”. When i sing people start suing. Its expensive.

Having just seen “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”, a tragic story about the horror of Nazi concentration camps, its more than a little “too soon” for me to be able to laugh about any image even remotely associated with Adolf Hitler.
For anyone wondering why I am so melancholic on the topic, take a look at the movie’s website: http://www.boyinthestripedpajamas.com/#/home
Now I know how it feels when everyone around you is speaking a different language; because, as it turns out, I am getting enough occasional text at the bottom of my screen to know that this thing has been subtitled; but alas my version of Firefox is preventing me from seeing them consistently; and in full screen mode I get nothing.
Pretty funny stuff … though I only recognize a handful of the names.
You should post something terse on the emergent church / post-evangelical movement sometime — even if only a question. I’ve been thinking about “it” a lot lately.
I think I’m finally developing some ‘take’ on ‘it’?
But I’ve still got questions,.
(Which doesn’t in an of itself make me Emergent, mind you.)
I don’t know about Stalingrad but brrrrrrrrr!
Abraham,
Regarding the first half of your post (ignoring for a fortnight for good measure)… why? And what happens after the fortnight? What do you do/say then?
That was pretty entertaining.
I have read Kluck and DeYoung’s book and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a clearer picture of what the Emergent church is all about.
i didnt find Kluck and DeYoung very helpful, esp. in regard to the global emerging church movement that can be quite different than the small American pockets that the authors chose to focus on.
But the VIDEO? soooo funny.
Best line = “GET ME PAGITT!!”
Honestly I laughed at some of it when I watched, but after reading all these gleeful comments, I’m kinda sickened by them and now the video in retrospect.
This is really sad. Someone put way too much time and arrogance into that video, regardless of what you think about the emerging church. How is this even remotely profitable for building up the Body of Christ?
I think you’re right, Barry. I see the wrong in the emergent church, but comparing them (who are mostly brothers and sisters) to the nazis? That’s serious, and not very humble. Let’s go after bad doctrine that saddens God, not make fun of fellow excellent ones who have fallen into confusion.
Muy Chistoso (Very funny!)
Thanks for sharing.
As someone who has benefited greatly from my friendships in Emergent Village I found the video quite amusing.
It pokes fun at us, the stereotypes around us AND actually implicitly pokes fun at all the people who harangue against it with their characterizations that claim a group of friends– who want to encourage each other to cooperate with the mission of God in their particular zipcode and don’t feel it necessary to get self-appointed gatekeepers permission to do so–are to a person this evil cabal that “taught a whole generation to rebel” and “are the greatest threat to Christianity” today.
Who knew?!?! I mean, I didn’t know my desire to think about where I’m doing ministry and be intentionally missional in every part of it was so bad.
That’s why this video is great. It should get people of whatever “stripe” to lighten up.
Love. this. video.
Everybody gets a dig.
lol i love it..great share!
I think someone just topped the Po-Motivators …
great job to whoever put this together!
“We don’t believe in absolutes,” gets my vote every day for a year of Tuesdays.
Though, “Get me Pagitt,” rates very high :)
Good thing the Emergent friends who posted above are interested in having fun poked at them. It most certainly has gone both ways.
Barry and BenM, I’m sorry you thought my video was arrogant. Thankfully, it appears that those actually in the emergent category “get it” and have been the biggest supporters of my little attempt at humor. I’ve already got new emergent Facebook friends as a result.
I only used Hitler because the mortgage crisis video made me laugh, so there’s no equating anyone with Nazis. As for way too much time, I missed Monday Night Football last week to put the video together, spending about five hours total from concept to completion. That was worth it, considering I’m getting 1,000 views a day and lots of commentary. You can read my theological book reviews to see my other side.
