Townes Van Zandt is someone some people will have heard of – but not enough.

And as with all great artists, it’s a little hard to say who he is ‘like.’ As a songwriter, he’s probably most like a country leaning Dylan.

    Here is his last.fm station.

And here is my favorite song of his, “She Came and She Touched Me.”

OK, and I’m throwing on my second favorite, though the YouTube video is terrible. Close your eyes and listen to the music: “None but the Rain.”

    Jake says:

1.The Wood Brothers. Groove-infused delta blues, mostly just stand-up bass and hollow-body guitar. If Van Morrison had grown up in Mississippi. Bass player is from Medeski Martin & Wood, pretty well-known jazz trio.

2.Fletcher McTavish. Kind of similar to above but much more laid-back, more soul-influenced. What you want to hear sitting on the back porch with a pipe and beverage. Also believers who do music very well. Listen to the first tune on their page, “Shoutin’ Out Loud”– very cool love song with nice Scripture allusions.

I’ll just list 2. I list tons more in my Music Monday posts.

The Welcome Wagon – produced by and sounds similar to Sufjan Stevens. Great album by a pastor and wife. Test drive at MySpace.

Beirut – First album had a balkan sound, 2nd more french. One of my favorite bands ever, and incredible live. Doesn’t sound much like anything you’ve probably heard, at least not recent stuff. It’s often gorgeous and at times very powerful. Check it at MySpace.

I strongly recommend the podcast “indieFeed” — especially the Blues iteration of such a thing, and the weekly, hour-long podcast “Roadhouse”, hosted by the same fellow.

You have to be a fan of the unpolished indie versions of the genre, but I have been a listener for a while now and it’s far better than the radio if you really love the blues.

    carissa says:

i can’t compare well to “famous” artists. i’m just bad at it.

-the now-defunct The Format: occasionally countryish, indie pop with peppy melodies and sort-of-depressing lyrics. (*there’s a very occasional swear, fyi.)

-Limbeck: alt-country/rock. they’re easy to listen to.

-The Weakerthans: “Canadian indie rock band that blends punk rock with folk rock.” download some free mp3s.

-The New Frontiers: in that “sincere indie rock” category, but they’re also Christians. i enjoy their slower stuff, like “Who Will Give Us Love?”

-Future of Forestry: in case you hadn’t heard of them, they used to be Something Like Silas and they’re musically excellent, worship-focused guys.

-Leonard Bernstein conducting The New York Philharmonic for Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. download it from iTunes (or wherever).

All of the following are people I work with, and highly recommend both as musicians and phenomenally godly people:

Clay Edwards (my worship leader! I play flute on his band but not on his CD). I have heard people compare his musical style to DMB. Mostly accoustic, lyrics full of the Word: http://tinyurl.com/clayedwardsCD

Audra Lynn (friend of mine): Not sure what to call her style… folk-rock? Amazing voice. http://tinyurl.com/audralynncd

Alisha Powell: Great voice; her music tends towards jazzy/Gospel-y/Latin-y styles. http://tinyurl.com/alishapowellCD

Misty Edwards (sister to Clay, above): Tends more towards rock, but writes incredibly powerful worship songs. She’s probably our best-known worship leader: http://tinyurl.com/9pxrtm

All of the above are singer/songwriters and worship leaders. Check them out!

It’s heavy metal/screamo. I know Nathan also likes to play all kinds of stuff. But I think what they have on the website is the metal music.

My kids think they sound like August Burns Red.

    Might I suggest

    Ron Block

Some bluegrass, some bluesy sounding, rocky sounding

He plays banjo and guitar for Alison Krauss, and much of her band is present on his recordings. All gospel. Worth a listen. Lyrics are great. Mostly/all originals.

Since I saw a couple references to Nickel Creek, but no mention of

    Punch Brothers

This is Chris Thile’s, new band. Chris is the former front man and driving force behind Nickel Creek. Their sound is somewhat more grassy than Nickel Creek, and the latest project is classical in nature.
