10 elements of a good social networking profile picture.
I’ve asked on Twitter what makes a good profile picture. (Searching Google mostly results in dating services.)

oops. my twitter profile pic just got busted on number five.
i agree with some of what he says as good general rules for all social networking – cropping, for example. but the impression i got of his ideal profile pic is like a yearbook picture (minus the braces and whatnot). i don’t “meet” new people on facebook, so that seems a little weird to me.
I think Abraham’s profile pic is a good one –even based on Godin’s insights.
I think that the photo should look like you — for all the good and ill that may inflict on the viewer. the best possible you, to be sure, but you nonetheless.
This is why my avatar is that cartoonified version of me: this is what people see when they see me. I’m just drawn this way.
