Don’t judge something's value by whether or not you can live without it.

When you take a break from something and you don’t miss it, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not valuable in your life.

Conversely, if you take a break from something and you do miss it, that might not mean it is valuable.

Might it be better to say, “Don’t merely judge something’s value…?” While it’s not the only factor, it is a factor.

I haven’t missed exercising but judging by how much it costs to buy new clothes, I know it is valuable and necessary.

CS Lewis wrote about those things which have no survival value but which give value to survival. A nice, pithy turn of phrase.

Wow, this thought was going through my head right before I clicked on your blog. I was talking with a woman at church recently about the marriage-potential of a dating relationship I was in. She tried to discern the strength of my feelings by asking if I could “live without him”, .. and used that as a diagnostic tool with me. I said “I don’t know… I’m sure I ~could~…” She was concerned. I was bothered by the question.

Absence does not necessarily make the heart grow fonder- sometimes it makes it grow weaker. It can be the actual presence of someone or something that keeps the bond strong.
For example, on Twitter today from @servantkeeper: The less we read the Word of God, the less we desire to read it, & the less we pray, the less we desire 2 pray.-George Muller

Exercise is an example. I could sit around for a week without missing pain and sweat. Bulges would testify to exercise’s value.
