Shouldn’t scientific innovation go toward things that are at least a little difficult or tedious?

hand-dryer

I’m occasionally amused by the brainpower that’s apparently spent on advancing hand-drying technology, given that a caveman’s method still works pretty handily.

We had one of these in one of our malls in Mobile, AL. It didn’t even work too well, in my opinion. I prefer the old “paper towel” method, although I know environmentalists are trying to “go green” and save trees.

I have trouble keeping my hands in the middle of those things.

They had that kind when I was in Japan. They were MUCH more effective than the hand dryers here…I liked them. :-)

Handily? Nice pun :)…indeed how would an un-handy hand dryer work?

    Andy says:

Actually, in settings where cleanliness is highly important and there’s a lot of handwashing going on, a non-contact hand dryer is a *great* idea. Towels can easily be contaminated, and having wet hands is undesirable when you have to handle food or medical instruments.

Reminds me of the Onion’s “Fast Food Feed Bags” bit.

    Is this a Geico commercial?

    Molly says:

But if we applied this principle too broadly, we wouldn’t have the amazing invention known to many as the “ice maker.” It’s pure genius, and purely unnecessary.

    • Myrddin says:

But maybe we would have more of other things that were pure genius and purely unnecessary. Like walks in the park or dandelion collections ;-)

That’s like the Dyson one in the IKEA bathrooms. The force of air makes the skin on your hands wrinkle like an astronaut’s face while launching to the moon. Not only does it rid your hand of moisture – but also does away with your hands’ epidermis.

The Dyson dryers are my second favorite part of going to IKEA. The first being good, cheap food.

i actually like those because they give me a free hand massage while drying my hands. impressed that i’ve seen them both in the Gulfport, Mississippi airport and the Istanbul, Turkey international airport.

    Matt Verhoog says:

Any, new invention in hand dryers is welcome, and needed because the old hand dryers quite simply do not work, It’s the old 5 seconds under the dryer followed by the quick wipe on the pants..
