Ohio: The state of tightrope walkers and acrobats

I received my packet from Ohio’s tourism department. (I hear it’s similar in awesomeness to Delaware.)
On the envelope it said:

What?

Here’s a list of great Ohio songs for your trip.
FunNy
oops,
I lost my balance.
OhiO IS lush and
beautiful.
In Amish Country there
are sometimes
payphones at ends of driveways.
Because it’s high in the middle and round on both ends, of course.
All the little chicks with the crimson lips say ‘Cleveland Rocks’.
I’m just sayin’.
hey! that’s where johnathon and i are from…
and i’m not even sure what that means… ‘balance?’
of what? weather? people? coordination?
it means what it means. you would understand if you had it.
Ha! It’s a coded punchline.
It made me think:
Ommmmm.
weird. It’s kind of like saying, “Ohio: it’s just better.” Better than what?
But just for sake of guessing, it could be the perfect balance of:
*agriculture and people.
*large cities and small towns.
*economic boom in some industries to economic bust in others.
*hilly southern region to rather flat northern region?
*friendliness to curmudgeonry-ness (that might not be a word).
But those aren’t really distinctive balances. They have those balances in every state in one form or another.
as an Ohio newby – moved here from north of Baltimore about 18 months ago when the hubs became the pastor of church in the area- I am pleased to say that we LOVE Akron, Ohio!!! and all of our friend from MD who come visit love it too. :) It’s family-friendly city living.
That’s funny because when my friend Jodi lived in Ohio she called it “the armpit of the nation”.
(I have never been in Ohio long enough to form an opinion. I’m sure it’s just fine.)
your last sentence doesn’t make your first one any less rude.
I’m sorry, Laurie. It’s just what my friend said when she lived there.
I have never spent any time in Ohio other than airports — and I am sure it is a nice place. (My friend didn’t happen to like it, though. Her opinion is hers, and valid for her.)
Sorry my comment bothered you.
Two Words:
Cedar Point.
It puts Valley Fair, Disneyland(world), and Six Flags to shame.
It’s in Ohio.
Amen, Jimmy. Amen.
I love Cedar Point!! I grew up about an hour from there and visited every summer. The Magnum is the best! :)
Ohio, the state of perfect balance—-maybe so but Cleveland definately rocks, Frank. I had heart surgery there nine years ago; at the ever efficient and breathtaking in every sense of the word, Cleveland Clinic!!!
As someone from Ohio, here are my theories:
1. The weather is balanced. They say if you don’t like the weather in Ohio, wait ten minutes and it will change.
2. The politics are…errr…balanced. This state can’t figure out whether it’s liberal or conservative, but we love the attention every four years.
3. The sports are balanced…The Cleveland Browns are equally as bad ad the Cincinnati Bengals. Likewise with the Indians and the Reds.
4. Road construction is balanced. They try to work on every major road all at the same time to keep things balanced and make sure the the inconvenience is balanced.
5. The colleges are so balanced that most people from out of state don’t even realize that there is an Ohio University (Go Bobcats!) and an Ohio State University. People just assume those of us who graduated from Ohio University went to OSU.
6. The people of Ohio are equally balanced in that from Cleveland, through Columbus, and all the way down to Cincinnati, they are all overly excited about high school football.
7. The Ohio River has caught on fire (long time ago…let it go), but as far as I know the state has never completely flipped over!
All of that said, I love it here!
Ohio as the state with perfect balance? Posting this on the eve of West Virginia Day? Deliberately provacative? All sentences ending with question marks?
Hey, take it easy on the First State!
