Anything by Bill Bryson is awesome. He also has a number of books on language that even I could get through.

Well, if you’re going to hike the Appalachian trail, you should also consider this.

As a AT thru-hiker myself, i can attest that there is a certain disdain for Bryson and his book by actual AT thru-hikers. 75% drop out before the end of the smokies. For the real hikers, its were they hit their stride.

Ed Garvey’s “the New Appalachian Trail” was way better then Bryson’s to me. Yet, if your a fan of travel literature, perhaps Bryson’s more your speed. While Garvey’s is a great narrative, containing a greater look at trail life.

I read this and took it with me on my trip along the first 20-ish miles on the trail in Georgia. We ended up (by chance) getting a ride from Wes Wisson, the guy who picked up Bill and his buddy at the airport…

Well, you know I’m pretty mucn read to go anywhere anytime. But I must stay that even beyond that urge, Bryson’s travel books make me want to go wherever he’s gone.

I laughed so hard I cried at the story of his friend chucking all the food over a cliff. That’s good glaven.

Bill Bryson is a hoot. His writing often involves the consumption of large quantities of beer, but what to do? (

Down Under (about Australia), Notes from a Big Country (about returning to America after 20 years) and his stuff on language are fun reads.

My brother-in-law is slowly, methodically hiking the Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee. I’m sure he would love to have you join him for a jaunt!
