Wal-mart diapers couldn’t be worse…No, that’s not true. They could be laced with poison.

For convenience, we recently bought Wal-mart’s generic diapers.

For 3 mornings Morrow woke up drenched. They have the absorbency of notebook paper.

You could always pad them with a wad of Walmart paper towels.

A lot of parents rave about Wal-mart diapers. I think their kids are dehydrated. Seriously though, I’ve heard that Wall-mart diapers either work for you or they don’t. If they do work for you, they are great. If they don’t then they’re awful. I’ve also heard very good things about Target diapers. Might want to give them a try. They are pretty cheap. Walgreen’s diapers are surprisingly good. They aren’t quite as absorbent as Huggies, but they will do in a pinch. And they’re dirt cheap on sale. Generally we stick to Huggies though. Huggies are so absorbent that we use less diapers. That means we save money and time…at least that’s how we justify it.

So have you found anything that you’re as pleased with as the old Target diapers yet? We’re having our first baby in a few weeks, so I’m suddenly quite interested in cheap quality diapers.

(And yes, I know about cloth diapering/gDiapers, and they won’t work for us at the moment for several reasons.)

Yeah, could have told ya this. They are horrible diapers and worthless. The kids they are made for pee A LOT more than they can hold. No such thing as cheap and quality.

Three mornings, eh? Pattern-recognition skills are finely honed in the Piper household.

    Happy new year!

Actually, they *are* laced with poison. :(

    • and cheap poison at that.

    • Courtney says:

That’s exactly what I was going to say. No thank you to Dioxin(carcinogenic chemical, listed by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals), Tributyl-tin(toxin that causes hormonal problems), and sodium polyacrylate(banned in tampons for causing toxic shock syndrome but still used in diapers).

      • Amber says:

I still haven’t figured out why the FDA hasn’t banned the use of bleach in diapers when it’s known to cause cancer and is banned in other sanitary products for that same reason.

I splurge on 7th Gen when I have to use disposables. “There’s not enough to cause a problem,” they say. But there have been no studies or tests that back this up, and I hate the thought of my kid’s sensitive parts being exposed to a strong carcinogen every day, all day for 3 years. :(

When we’re at Wal-Mart, we get Luvs. In Minneapolis, they’re a little more expensive than Wal-Mart’s crappy (or should I say “pee-y” kind), and less expensive than Pampers and Huggies.

In Nevada (where we are on vacation), they’re all priced the same at the nearest Wal-Mart.

We have, however, been pleased with Target’s “Wonder Bread” style diapers.

Ha Ha! My wife is saying the same thing! We received about 200 from my mother in law – a totally well-intentioned, thoughtful, and needed gift. But my wife is NOT liking the diapers. We will probably return them for Luv’s, which is bargain priced compared to Pampers & Huggies and are reasonably good.

    Kim says:

Luvs. You gotta try them and for boys I have found them to work really well AND they are the only ones who have an actual guarantee … not that we’ve used it. Still, we’ve tried them all. Pampers are the best and then Luvs. Huggies are wet on the inside … even if they are dry on the outside and who wants that? And here is where the comment has gone on painfully too long and I’ve exposed my passion about diapers. Sigh.

Just add it to the list of things that stink about Wal-Mart. I’d drive ten miles past a Wal-Mart to get to a Target.

    Greta says:

We did the same thing – bought the Walmart brand in a pinch and just to try them out. Horrible, just horrible.
I prefer Pampers (and that’s what my kids get for the first few months and from grandparents). Otherwise, we do Luvs!

Luvs are absorbent and have a good shape, but last time we used them, they had a scent. The main reason we use Huggies is their lack of noticeable scent. I can’t stand the smell of Pampers or Luvs. I can also save you some time and money and tell you that the natural diapers are less absorbant (even the Huggies brand natural diapers). You could spring for Huggies brand overnight diapers to save yourself some laundry. They cost more, but you can get Huggies coupons if you get on their mailing list. We have used them for 3 boys and they’re worth it at night. You could offset the cost by using cheaper diapers during the day when absorbency is not an issue. I do wish the Huggies diapers were a bit wider like Pampers or Luvs. But the smell factor is the deciding one for me.

    • Laura says:

We use two different diapers. During the day when you are able to change the diapers more often we use the cheap ones (target or luvs) and for night we use pampers or huggies extra protection/overnight diapers. It has worked great and the only way we have been able to keep our girls dry and night, but not have to spend as much on the diapers for the day time.

I order diapers from Amazon. It has a lot of different brands. It is cheaper than Costco and I don’t have to pay shipping and local tax.

I did notice that I needed to change Morrow a few more times than usual today. Extra-soggy bottom boy.

    KD says:

I like the Costco diapers, but now with three kids and a billion stairs to walk up from the house, I’m all about diapers.com. They ship free with orders of $49 or more, the next day (to many US locations) and no tax. When I order from them I get LUVS. Pampers Swaddlers are my newborn indulgence and after that I just go with whatever I can find cheapest.

    Josephine says:

Beware of CVS generic brand diapers. We recently had to buy size 4 and 5 diapers for convenience. They look exactly the same (the 5 diaper doesn’t even look bigger). Numbers are not printed on the diapers. They’re printed in tiny font (at least size 9 or smaller) on the tabs.

  23. 23
    Gail says:

As with many things, you DO get what you paid for. Huggies all the way. No leaks, blow outs or other offenses.

  24. 24
    Jeanie says:

Can’t help you here (we use Kissaluvs cloth diapers and have never leaked or had a blow out) BUT I certainly think it’s cruddy to make diapers that don’t hold A BABY’S amount of liquid or solid waste.

I’m with the commenter above who would drive 10 miles past WalMart to get to Target, though. LOL

I hope you find what meets the family’s needs the best.

    karen says:

Our grandson wears Huggies. Always purchased on sale with coupons. I’m starting to think that body shape plays a role in the debate. Our friend has a petite, skinny baby and thinks Pampers work much better than Huggies, our little guy has chubby little legs and Pampers simply don’t work on him.

  26. 26

I’ll be the dissenter. We use Pampers Swaddlers during the “liquid baby poop” stage, and then move to Walmart when it turns solid (TMI, I know). We’ve used them for 4 kids now, and I like them! We only experience leaks during the day if we leave their diapers on too long, and then I guess we get what we deserve…
