As Annie Dillard says, church pews should come with crash helmets and seatbelts.
A guest post by Wesley Hill.
Why does a Christian radio station bill itself as “safe for the whole family”? Whatever else Christianity is, it certainly isn’t that.

LOL
(They ARE safe for the whole family. 90% of their content are ads. It’s easy to have family-friendly music when you don’t play any.)
I wonder what missionary in areas that are hostile to Christianity would say about Christianity being safe for the whole family.
I thought I might be able to work my way through the Bible with my boy but how do you explain Cain and Able to a 2-year-old? Or Joseph? It’s not kid stuff. It’s definitely not safe or easy.
boys who didn’t love their brother the way God wanted them to.
Check out your church library for books that will help you teach to his age.
Or Lot and his daughters…
Well, there’s safe and then there’s safe, isn’t there?
What’s that, Jesus? you came to set father against son and mother against daughter?
Christianity has been a source of real strife in my family, and I’m rather cut off from them due to my faith.
Christianity, safe for the whole family. Doubtful
I never thought of it that way – just gives this pastor another reason to avoid Christian radio. Good insight!
But avoid Christian radio in favor of what?
silence, perhaps.
Ours says in a booming salesman type voice, “Safe for the little ears.” Of course ours explains that “safe” means no cussing or sex themes. But it’s certainly not safe if you have a fear of repetition. I think they only have 20 songs in their queue on any given week.
is that four different versions of five different songs?
Amen, brother.
AMEN!
It’s saying the radio station is safe for the whole family, right? Not Christianity, per se. Makes sense to me, as there are some stations I’ll listen to, but not allow my children to. Not because of the songs with cussing/questionable content, but things like questionable ads in between, some of the programs on NPR, etc.
this has been my question about Christian radio forever!
Because when they say ‘Christianity’ they’re referring to a culture that may or may not actually include elements of what is properly Christianity.
it always irritated me when the radio station we listened to in LA claimed they were “safe for the whole family” and yet regularly broadcasted commercials on “breast augmentation/enhancement.” Hmmm. Explain that to 2 and 4 year old boys between WAAAY too many Amy Grant songs.
*waving at Wesley*
Hey Wesley, my question for you is this: What in the world are you doing listening to a Christian radio station? Didn’t know you know only people are Christian? *grin*
I’ve got some Regina Spektor here with your name written all over it.
Hope you are having a good trip.
that has always been one of my favorite Annie Dillard quotes wes.
nice.
LOL! that quote by Annie Dillard is plain funny
