This goes for American football too as it get played with helmets and padding – go figure?
Association football (‘soccer’) – a gentlemans’ game played and watched by thugs.
Rugby football (‘rugger’) – a thugs’ game played and watched by gentlemen.
Of course, the former isn’t true so many players are simply over-paid pre-maddonas
pre-madonnas as in Madonna wannabees? Or
prima donnas as in the female lead in an opera, a phrase that has come to mean s/o who is difficult to work with and tempermental…
