Possibly the worst guitar solo EVER!
Compliments of John Hiatt:
(The video will start at the relevant place in the song.)
If he’s not wasted, there’s really no excuse…And all this while on stage with Lyle Lovett, too! Oh, it hurts. It hurts so bad.
I highly doubt you can listen to all two minutes of this.
* * * * *

if you think this might be the worst guitar solo ever, you’ve obviously never listened to me playing the guitar…
this sounds like one of those mock creed videos.
Nothing like popping a handful of Ambien before a solo.
I like how at one point Lovett just stops trying to play along. And then at the end he just kind of gives him a look like… “Wild Turkey Foundation man?”
I like the 58 soulful bends of the same note to kick of the solo.
After the performance was over, he told Steve Via to “stick it.”
I’m not sure if I could enjoy it any more or any less if I was wasted.
That Gibson sure does have great tone.
Phew, I knew there was another note in there.
HA!
I’ve seen this before. After the weird intro I actually like the solo. It’s odd, but creative.
i liked it too
People were laughing…maybe it was a joke? Maybe?
Well. I did it. I listened to all two minutes. But now my ears are bleeding. Thanks dude.
I saw these guys on tour a few years ago and THAT was not how John performed at the show I saw.
On a positive note, that show introduced me to Guy Clark (guy on the far right) whose L.A. Freeway secured its spot as one of my favorite songs ever.
ps You’re welcome.
After that anti-chordal carnage, I recommend this percussive palette cleanser.

You’re wrong. It’s great!
I liked it.
Abraham, I think it takes an expert guitarist to play something so simple but clever that it sounds like the “worst ever” to someone who is a novice.
Wait. So are you saying that, since I don’t play guitar, when I hear guitar playing that sounds terrible, I can assume the person playing it is an expert?
No, but you can’t assume that he’s not an expert.
I kinda liked it.
That is not possibly the worst guitar solo ever, it is the worst guitar solo ever.
I really enjoyed it. The music theorist in me enjoyed the fact that he was working in a different meter and pushing the tonal center that Lyle was in. Call me nerdy or weird–I’m cool with that…
Totally agree! I really felt pushed to understand, and it seemed to not make sense in spots, but right after I began thinking that, he made it make sense to me. The only thing I have issue with is the style changes…
Well, Abraham… once again, you have abused your ‘most favored’ status in my blogroll to induce me to waste 2 more minutes of my life… however, sheep that I am I will keep on reading.
I LOVE John Hiatt. Absolutely LOVE him. And this SUCKS! I started playing the the video and this is the conversation that followed.
Joe: What’s that?
Me: Guitar solo.
Joe: By who?
Me: You’ll NEVER guess.
Joe: (after a few moments) Orison.
