What was your first Bob Dylan album and what format was it in?

(It’s not Dylan’s birthday anymore, so I’m gonna do a post on him…)

The first album I owned of his:

MTV Unplugged” – Cassette

dylan 2

I got it in 1995 and listened to it in my parents garage while I tried to learn to play the guitar.

What about you?

And while we’re at it, just for fun: How about tell us what your favorite Dylan album is.

Mine is “Time Out of Mind.”

    Michael Rice says:

While not technically Dylan, my father bought me the Traveling Willburys Volume One in 1988. I didn’t appreciate it until a few years ago.

My favorite: The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall is probably one of my favorite songs of all time.

    Chase says:

My first Dylan album was “Good As I Been to You” (on cassette).

My favorite probably is “The Times They Are A-Changin’”. It’s the one I go to most of the time without thinking about it. At the risk of ridicule, I will say that I’ve really been enjoying “Shot of Love” since I downloaded it earlier this month.

my wife got me a single disc 2007 Best Hits sort of thing that i really enjoy.

Not a big dylan fan at all. best song to me…Hurricane (and that might be because of the movie!)

    Amanda says:

I got Bringing It All Back Home on CD about my sophomore year of college. I’ve only been a Dylan fan for about five years and I feel like I’ve missed out. The Times They Are A-changing is probably my favorite.

Wow, some people got their first Dylan album as mp3 download… how old am I exactly..??

First album: Highway 61 Revisited on cassette tape (see, not that old!)

    Favorite: impossible to decide.

Favorites: Blood on the Tracks, Bob Dylan, Bringing It All Back Home, Nashville Skyline, Bootleg Series Vol. 4, among others

When I was about 12 or 13 and starting to play the guitar seriously, my parents came home from a morning of garage sale shopping with a copy of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” They thought I might enjoy it. I still have it. While it’s not my favorite Dylan album (Blood on the Tracks), “Girl from the North Country,” “Down the Highway,” and especially “Don’t Think Twice it’s Alright” are all masterpieces.

    Jan says:

First album: Slow Train Coming, vinyl
    Current favorite: Modern Times, CD

I think that was the concert I sent to however I really don’t like Dylan in concert that much. The last time I saw him in concert was so long ago I’d forgotten how much I didn’t like him live.

    Abraham,

If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion, how about a favorite Dylan line or verse post?

Slow Train Coming. Back when he was a Christian. :)

    Brian says:

I love many of Dylan’s songs, but I have never been able to get used to his style of “singing”. I’ve never bought any of his albums in any format, though I’ve considered it many times. Perhaps I’ll read the comments and give one a try.

First: No Direction Home Soundtrack (Bootleg 7)
    Favorite: 1966 Live (Bootleg 4)

    Bobby Gilles says:

“The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” on cassette. My favorite … Man, that’s a tough call. I’m gonna go with “Blood On The Tracks” though.

    Scottg says:

First: Slow Train Comin’-vinyl, then Blood on the Tracks, vinyl also. So How Old Am I!

    Favorite: Slow Train Comin’

  18. 18
    Stuart Laughlin says:

I hate to break it to everyone, but Slow Train Comin’ is truly *not* a very good Dylan album. I mean, it’s still a Dylan album and everything, but still!

So wait, does that count as ridicule? :)

    Myrddin says:

Nothing to call me out of the self-imposed exile from commenting due to my new job like a Dylan post.

    FAVORITE: Time Out of Mind

TIE FOR SECOND: Blood on the Tracks, Oh Mercy, Desire, The Times They Are A’Changin

    • KP says:

Welcome back, Myrddin! I, for one, missed you.

My first Dylan album was Infidels, though I didn’t know this for several months because it was an unlabeled, dubbed cassette that was in a sack of cassettes I got at a thrift store. I just wanted cheap tapes I could record over myself, but Bryan Adams, Dire Straits, and Kansas were in there, too, so I ended up listening to them instead.

    • Yes. Welcome back.

    chamblee54 says:

The first BD that I got was probably “Blind Boy Grunt”, on vinyl. It was a bootleg, recorded in a New York hotel around 1961.
The favorite would be “Blonde on Blonde”, with “Highway 61″, “John Wesley Harding”, “Bringing it all back home” and “another side” not far behind.
I saw him with the band at the omni in 1974, and was not impressed. I won tickets to see him at the house of blues during the 1996 olympics, and could barely hear what he said, the sound was so bad.
I have a download of him with Johnny Cash that is pretty cool.
I got a book about him at the library a few months ago. I got disgusted after about fifty pages. This story is on my blog .
Mr. Zimmerman has the same birth surname as Ethel Merman. May 24 is also the birthday of Queen Victoria and Patti Labelle. It is the day that Samuel Morse sent the message ” What hath G-d wrought” over the telegraph, starting the age of electric communication.

  25. 25
    James Lepine says:

    The Essential Dylan on CD.
Favorite is either Blonde on Blonde or Blood on the Tracks… too hard to pick. They’re both so great.

  26. 26
    Scott E says:

First Album: Blonde on Blonde and it was on CD.

    My favorite is Street Legal.

And although you didn’t ask my second favorite is Blood on the Tracks.
