Any Slovenian readers will be upset – they lost to England, but felt that they could just get through, then seconds later heard “The USA have scored, they are going through”.
1-0 against Algeria was better than England, who have got out of the funk and found their groove at last.
Of course, as an Englishman I’m torn – we’ve come second, we get our old enemies and likely defeat in the shape of Germany and Argentina in the next two rounds (if we and the Argentinians get through). However, the joy and glory of beating those teams will be so much more than beating Ghana and Uruguay/S Korea and the grief of being knocked out by one of these favoured teams will be less than if knocked out by non-big names. Beating the Germans at penalties and Argentina through some handled goal would end some chips on English shoulders too. Added bonus of being at a wedding on Saturday, so I can enjoy both that, and the England game on Sunday at separate times, thanks to that Donovan goal.
I agree, but i’ll still take Ghana over Germany. Personally i don’t think anyone expects the u.s. to advance past any game, so if we lose in these next two games people will say, “oh well”. The u.s. hasn’t shown (outside of the Confederations Cup) that they should win any games. The only real consistent thing i see from the u.s. is that that always play to the level of their opponent. If its a bad team, we play bad…a good team we play well. We rarely have commanding victories and we rarely get blown out. All i can say is that i hope it works all the way to a World Cup victory!
Some thoughts:
1. Is it really that impressive to defeat Algeria 1-0?
2. Was America “awesome” prior to this World Cup? Will it be awesome if they don’t win again?
3. Was it really worth this dude’s time to make this idolatrous video?
4. That goal was pretty cool.
America was only awesome TODAY. After this goal. The video solidified this. America = hot dogs, Weird Al Yankovic, and hunting. Maybe guns too.
Videos like this remind me why we have the internet.
That^ is the only format in which I can enjoy that song.
Come on… this pure awesome.
