Norm’s terrible, terrible beer
The bar on the set of Cheers was fully-functional, but that doesn’t mean they served very good drinks. The brew constantly in front of Norm was near beer (3.2% alcohol) that had a pinch of salt added to keep it foamy under the heat of the set lights.

This may be the recipe for the worst beer ever: Weak, warm, and salty.
And, yes, he actually had to drink it…

Warm? Salty? Sounds like a real ale.
Not so much on the weak front.
I think “near-beer” would have to be 0.5% or less (or even .05% like O’douls). 3.2% is fairly standard for many of the stuff under-educated Americans drink…
salt is actually a pretty good trick. Just don’t drink the last sip…
Round here near-beer is another way of referring to 3-2. I see why it’s used for non-alcoholic though, too. That probably makes more sense.
but man, they paid him well for it.
Wait, what? He wasn’t doing it for the free drinks?
Looks like the salt was not working very well in the photo.
sparkling cider seems like a much better option!
