5 million cans of Similac baby formula recalled
Abbott is initiating a proactive, voluntary recall of certain Similac-brand, powder infant formulas in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.
Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility.
The United States Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.
There is a site set up to let you check if your formula is affected. At the moment, though, I can’t access it. Perhaps because of the other couple thousand parents who are curious.
Anyway, it doesn’t seem too serious, but I assumed some of you would like to know.

No bueno! I am a nanny and the 4 mo. old I take care of eats Similac formula… and a few days ago he suddenly started refusing to eat. He’s hungry all the time but he is barely eating his formula. Not cool. Hoping we can turn this around.

We’re adopting a sweet baby TOMORROW and none of our similac we got yesterday is affected.

just one more reason to breastfeed as long as possible and avoid the formula bandwagon… free food made specifically for your baby, by your body…
….unless you can’t. Yay for adoption!
Yay indeed! I mean no disrespect for those who go through such a process to bless a child.
My body isn’t make any food for my babies…free or otherwise. :)
