If you had to write about something you know nothing about, what would it be?
There’s a post over at ProBlogger about the value of starting a blog in a niche you’re unfamiliar with. I haven’t read it yet, but the first advantage that comes to mind is that writing about something you don’t know anything about makes you learn.
If I were to do this, I’d either blog about wine or raising girls. Maybe both. (As far as I know, there’s no site out there dealing with how dads can raise their daughters to both enthusiastically and prudently appreciate wine…on a budget, of course.)
If you were to start a blog in a niche you know nothing about, what topic would you choose?
* * * * *

A cooking blog. I can make a mean grilled cheese sandwich, and that’s about the extent of my cooking skills!
Forget anything good or nice. If you don’t have anything to say, focus on politics and religion.
The love of squirrels.
I think that’s the unforgivable sin.
quantum mechanics.
or maybe biblical hebrew (which i’ve studied for over 3years now and still know nothing about).
I plan to do this exact thing on church planting.
But I think I would choose photography. I love photography blogs, and I love taking photos, but I am a terrible photographer.
Or the TV show Lost. Ugh.
Well…. if you would like to learn some, my friend Matt has a blog about that! http://www.thedigitaltrekker.com
Cooking!!!!
I’d become an expert about niche blogging.
Oh wait, it’s been done.
Darn.
What it means to be a woman.
good idea- some women would like to know too…
That’s an interesting question. In college, I studied both in the humanities and science departments, which basically means I know very little about a lot. I also watch more Food Network and Project Runway than one person should, so I know at least a smidgen about those fields. As for something I know absolutely nothing about: the life of a circus performer. And raising kids. My blog would be about raising kids as a female circus performer traveling from city to city.
I feel that this isn’t what the original blog post had in mind, though.
Dude, I’m with you on the raising girls to appreciate wine idea.
Those are areas when I am a novice, but I’m in both for the long-haul.
Interesting idea. I guess as long as the project was approached with an outward admission that you literally know nothing about the topic and are learning as you go, it could be well accepted.
What topic would I choose? I have absolutely no idea.
If I were to write about something I know absolutely nothing about it would be car maintenance with a focus on restoration. :) Followed closely by interior design…
Something in the home improvement vein.
Welding and, or, painting.
Psychology. People are the wierdest thing God created, and since we are created in His image, he must be weird too, so that makes a great subject to write about. He’s the biggest geek I know, and that is AWESOME!
parenting.
Fuel filters. Well, not really, but over a year ago I wrote about 50 articles on changing the fuel filter in that may different cars. Thank goodness many of the Ford models were the same, many of the Toyotas, etc.
You’re right. It was a matter of learning as I wrote.
Hmm. Lots of good ideas so far… car & home repair, quantum mechanics, some areas of politics would all be fun to learn more about.
Maybe I’ll go with digital security. Like encryption, computer hackers, government firewalls and that sort of thing. Sounds like fun & useful stuff that I know nothing about.
Philosophy, final answer!
Being not awesome. Or enjoying concert band.
Haha, good one, Brad!
It would have to be interesting or at least to some people otherwise no one would read the blog and why blog if no one is going to read it. So I think I would blog about cake decorating, landscaping, or 1940′s movies. Are any of those interesting, though?
