Note: These stats are for liters of pure alcohol, not liters of alcoholic beverages. So the world average of 6.1 liters per person works out very roughly to around 300 drinks a year.

I noticed there is no data for Greenland. We talked to some missionaries in Greenland a few years ago who told us that alcoholism is a terrible problem there, wreaking havoc on the lives of a large percentage of the population (they were ministering in the more northern communities of Greenland). Very similar to Russia.
As an American I can make no sense of a map that refers to “litres”. It also appears the red curtain is still alive and well.

I could be wrong, but I think Ireland leads the world in alcohol consumption.
not correct. Portugal + czech republic for example are higher.
There is an excellent lecture on alcoholism was given at the L’Abri Conference in Rochester, MN Feb. 11-12,2011 (the conference theme was “Things Fall Apart” and the lectures will be available shortly to download.) Very thought provoking.
It’s impossible that Azerbaijan which is Muslim country drinks more alcohol than Georgia which is Christian country and has big tradition of wine.
This is enough to say that this map is just wrong.
