Once we get more interesting characters, they will become uninteresting because of familiarity.
That said, we need pronunciation markers so people (especially non-native speakers) know which sound the vowels make.

More characters? Shoot, most people can’t spell with the characters we have.

Only because each written vowel has multiple possible sounds… if each sound had only 1 corresponding phonograph it would be a lot easier.
And by phonograph I mean phonogram… because drawing little pictures of phonographs instead of letters would just be silly.
Or would it?
One of the Webdings fonts probably includes a phonograph.
