This is hilarious. My mom has described to me one of her favorite hymns when she was a kid. It is called “Surely the cross I’d bear.”

But, of course, when learning the lyrics by rote, mom just assumed the song was about a cross-eyed bear named Shirley.

  5. Diana Wright says:

Ours was Gladly, the Cross-Eyed Bear.

  6. Mary says:

Lol! Whenever the radio announcer was reading obituaries, I heard “Massive Christian Burial” instead of “Mass of Christian Burial.”

  7. Winnie says:

Thanks for all the laughs, and all the cross bears!!

FACT: One of the meanings for the word “awful” can be “full of awe; reverential”, although this meaning fell out of common usage about 80 years ago…

FACT: The word “gay” used to mean “happy”, rather than “homosexual”.

FACT: In the early 20th century, Canadian hymnals actually included a hymn entitled, “God Is Awful, He Made Me Gay!”

    True story… :)
