White audience… they clapped on 1 and 3.
they clapped with the appropriate time signature…. 4/4 isn’t universal
Whether they clapped with the appropriate time signature or not, (which they clearly did – they’re not going to clap in 3 are they), Nic’s point was that, for the part in which they were clapping, it would be more stylistically appropriate to clap on the the off-beats, or 2 and 4. The point here is that white people do not, generally speaking, inherentally clap on 2 and 4, because it is not in their culture to do so, and have not been shown that in this style of music, derived from a black/African American culture, to clap on 2 and 4. Therefore, your point about 4/4, which is in fact partly correct, (for many cultures have no such direct concept of 4/4 e.g. Western Indian Classical music), is completely irrelevent. However the idea of 4 (or 2, or 8, or any other equivalent) beats in a bar, or of such a feel, certainly does exist throughout the world.
Not all “white people” clap on 1 and 3. From my experience, it seems to be more of a western thing (as in western hemisphere, not as in cowboys). When I go to Russia, we all inevitably wind up clapping on EVERY beat during worship by the middle of the week because we start out with the Americans and Western Europeans clapping on 1 and 3 and the Russians clapping on 2 and 4 and then everybody remembers, “Oh, they clap funny,” so we all try to compensate for each other and it just turns into a clap-tastic disaster.
Yes sorry, that would be more correct.
