Anti-tank dogs ran under tanks and exploded.

From Wikipedia:

Anti-tank dogs were dogs taught to carry explosives to tanks, armored vehicles and other military targets. They were intensively trained by the Soviet and Russian military forces between 1930 and 1996 and used in 1941–1942 against German tanks in World War II.

Although the original dog training routine was to leave the bomb and retreat so that the bomb would be detonated by the timer, this routine failed and was replaced by an impact detonation procedure which killed the dog in the process.

The dog in the image below is being trained…

Anti-tank dogs were kept hungry and taught to fetch their food from beneath tanks. When used in battle, the dog would be outfitted with a mine that had a lever sticking up from the dog’s back. The lever would be pushed backward and detonate the bomb when the dog crawled under the tank.

If my memory serves me correctly it seems that the first batch of dogs trained by the Russians (I think) were trained using their own tanks…and so when deployed in battle the dogs ran under friendly tanks instead of the enemy tanks.

    sad, yes. but also ingenious.

there is a reason we have dogs as pets and not the other way around.

Yeah, it’s so sad that those dogs died during a war. Nevermind the 26 MILLION Russian people who died as a result of WWII. They should have strapped bombs on themselves, right? I mean, 13% of the population was already dead, more than 1 in 10 people that you knew died, so what’s a few more, right?

Dogs never did anything to deserve this and they don’t care about people’s petty arguments. This was the peoples issues and dogs payed the price. That is what makes it so bad. If you want to kill off your whole species over ridiculous issues, fine, but leave the peaceful natural species out of it. A dog would only kill for food, and would utilize everything it killed for food. This is just sick and totally evil. So is using horses for war too, and we certainly did that.

      • El Duderino says:

That’s not an argument, just some much needed perspective. A dog is peaceful, natural species? Holy shit what turnip truck did you fall off of?
As an aside, families were eating their children in Stalingrad so maybe you could find a corner of your weepy bleeding liberal heart to give them a pass for wasting their food, (yes dogs and anything else that walked or crawled, were eaten too) in combat so that by chance they might survive the war.

Yep, sad. But if you haven’t felt that way about people in a war, and it took dogs dying to make you feel real sympathy, well, you might want to ask yourself, “what the hell is wrong with me?”
