The two real differences in those photos:
1) Bogey is dressed up. Your fedora is not meant to be worn with a fleece jacket and a t-shirt.
2) The first picture is perfectly lighted by an expert cinematographer, on a face posed by a professional actor, director, and make-up artist. The second is using a cheap flash, which brings out the natural redness in his face.
One difference is that the “what you bought” fedoras and the one Bogey is wearing are nice felt hats, classically styled. The pin-striped fedora on the other hand, well….not so much. And with a brim that turns up all the way around. Doesn’t stand a chance.
Additional notes: the pinstripe Fedora is totally a girl’s hat. Look at the skinny brim and how it’s obviously too small for him. I used to own one just like it.
And I have only seen one man rock the Fedora and rock it well. He was also rocking a buttoned down tuxedo vest, slacks, a tie, and a Sherlock Holmes style pipe.
Yep, Fedoras (even the modern ones that are skinny brimmed) can be worn by males too, and as long as you tip it in the front and wear nice clothes you look good!
The hat on the right isn’t a fedora with a skinny brim; it’s a Trilby. Different shape, different hat. Sort of like how a cat is not a lizard with fur, or a motorcycle isn’t a car with two wheels.
1. The hats on the left and on Bogey are fedoras.
2. The hat on the contemporary, goateed young man is a trilby.
3. What makes a hat look good on you:
a. The shape of the hat, including height and shape of the crown, width of the brim, etc. in relation to the shape and size of your own head, face, neck, and shoulders.
b. Color, texture, and quality of materials in relation to the wearer’s coloring, head and/or facial hair styling.
c. The materials in the hat in relation to the clothing style and materials you are sporting with it.
This is the truth.
I’m glad someone came out and said it.

Don’t hate on fedoras.
Precisely! Don’t eve think about hating on the world’s Snazziest hat!!!
You said snazzy, you look like that guy in a fedora, no question.
Disagree. Fedoras can still be worn well…and when done right, they’re awesome.

It only works if you live in black and white. Oh and you have a wardrobe and makeup crew following you

I don’t think they make hat brims as wide as they used to… My hubby can hardly find a hat in his size and when he does the brim is way to narrow. fwiw
Which is why I no longer wear a fedora. I look like a hipster d-bag!
I certainly can’t wear one, but I have some friends that really really pull it off well and continue to do so on a daily basis.

Whatever it is, it really isn’t fit for wearing.
I wish I could post this in every airport I visit. Every time I step off a plane I feel like I accidentally stumbled into a fedora convention.
I go swing dancing a fair amount, and it’s few and far between that I find someone who can actually pull off the fedora look. It can be done though.
Yes, that is a trilby, and no, the way he is wearing it just ain’t right. Bad rim and an even worse goatee.
I also happen to think my hubs can rock a trilby like nobody’s business.
Can someone make a diagram like this for trench coats too?
I rock a fedora. I also show a great silk square in my breast pocket. As others have pointed out, it’s the whole, put-together look.
Tom Waits can.
x) i have a fedora :D i think you just need the proper clothing :D

Hey! I think the guy on the right looks pretty cool, too!
