I don’t keep money long enough to decorate/deface it. I use it as currency.

Although there is a law against defacing us currency, it mainly applies to coins. However, it is illegal to deface bills in such a way that it no longer is recognizable or usable. Like for instance you can’t make 1 dollar bill into looking like 10 dollar. Now that is defacing and it called counterfeiting. That’s against the law 100%. I’ve had many us currency bills in my days that had been written on or drawn on. Many people write their website domain names. That’s why people get away with it. The law strictly applies to process that completely alters the bills from use or its value not people writing on it or drawing on it. I would be surprised if the retailers won’t accept these bills.
