Solvayhütte: Mountainside hut is an emergency rest stop for crazy climbers

From Wikipedia:

The Solvay Hut is a mountain hut located on the north-eastern ridge of the Matterhorn, near Zermatt in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. At 4,003 metres (13,133 ft), it is the highest mountain hut owned by the Swiss Alpine Club, but can be used only in case of emergency.

From a comment at TYWKIWDBI:

I remember visiting this hutte back in 1974 when I climbed the Matterhorn. It is about 2/3 of the way to the top! It’s kind of the last pause for the climbers before the really steep stuff at the top. That drop-off is no illusion!!

I’m less impressed by the climbers than the burly Swiss who built the thing.

This is an amazing picture, no doubt, but people who do this stuff are out of their minds.

It would be a bummer to get there and the “No Vacancy” light be on.

I found myself panicking a little just now. I don’t do heights or cliffs…these pictures freak me out!

i am with you. i can only look for so long before my mind starts putting me there and i begin to panic.

The mind amazes me… this picture is the coolest thing ever…! But put a picture of a cave or sewer pipe or even a hole in a tree on here and I just need to move on. Why heights for you and small spaces for me?
