Tennis grunts: The loudest points between Venus Williams & Maria Sharapova

Regarding the “Tennis grunt,” Professor Alison McConnell of Brunel University says,
By inhaling before the ball is hit then crying out at the moment of impact, a player’s throat narrows, keeping some wind in the lungs to improve core strength and balance.

Watching Wimbledon right now and fortunately no grunting.

Larcher De Brito … loudest and longest tennis grunt….
I thought it was a joke when I first saw her play.
Firework impression?
If grunting is so necessary to gain that competitive edge, how come none of the men have to do it?
I agree Paul. Seems like faux masculinity to me. And wouldn’t people be grunting in every sport that required a sudden burst of energy? If it truly gained one a competitive edge it would be nearly universal.
Faux masculinity? Wow…just wow.
Venus’ grunt is way more hardcore. GET IT GIRL!
Guys realize that being slightly less efficient in each swing is balanced by the gain in cool points by not grunting.
I think Venus faked the first serve.
Connors has been grunting since the 1970′s. just not as high-pitched.

I’ve heard men do it, too, on televised matches, especially when the volleying was getting faster. I think that mainly the men don’t vocalize it, so it’s not as obvious unless the microphone is closer to the player.
