Soy sauce makes dead squid dance
Actually, I have no idea if the squid is all the way dead… It’s freaky, regardless.
If you’re familiar with this dish, do you want to tell us more?

“Apparently due to the ions in soy sauce, it makes the nerves in the tentacle squirm as you eat it.”

Not entirely sure if the squid can do this alive or dead, but it’s definitely teetering towards the dead side once it gets to you, seeing as its non-motile. It’s the sodium in the soy sauce (so yes, ions) that causes its tentacle muscles to contract, not unlike our own muscle system (anyone remember the Sodium-Potassium pump from high school bio?).
aaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why wouldn’t you want to put this wriggling alien in your mouth?
This is why, if you have really fresh fish, don’t put fresh lemon juice or salt on them before cooking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khW3nLG_xoY
Okay that was like from my nightmares. UGGGHH!
Can I just get a bacon cheeseburger please?
make that two bacon cheeseburgers, please!!!!!!!!!!
Would you like some animal cruelty for dinner? No thanks.
Not really cruelty since its dead lol
Clearly not completely dead if the nerve endings are working
It’s dead. Involuntary twitching of muscular fibers due to ionic equalizing does not equate to life. It’s somewhat analogous to shocking a detached frog’s leg with electricity and watching it contract. Still pretty freaky, though.
Not true. Check out Jason’s video above^ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khW3nLG_xoY). Are those fish not completely dead?
They’re fish. Who cares? Whether they’re alive or dead is irrelevant – it isn’t worth the energy to debate.
I agree, the lack of compassion towards living things blows my mind and makes me happy for the inevitable end of our species.
I’ve actually had live squid before … O,o
Regardless of if the squid is all the way dead yet or not… Why, for the love of everything appetizing, would you WANT to make your food do that?!?!
And I’m never going to crave calimarii ever again. Thanks for the cost savings!
All of this dead or not dead talk is making me think of “The Princess Bride”. Ok everyone, commence the quotes…..
Robert Krulwich from RadioLab has a blog on this today: http://www.npr.org/blogs/krulwich/2011/08/01/138890515/food-on-a-plate-shouldn-t-move?ft=1&f=5500502
Would not, could not!!!
oh gross – definitely not going to try that
ok this one i didn’t like so much.
you should eat the squid right after you put soy sauce on it because the tentacles/suction cups will stick to your tongue and throat…even your stomach. it’s more fun than watching it “dance”. Go to Korea and try it. it’s famous there.
Perhaps it’s something similar to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YZJt_Bw3eo&feature=player_embedded#!
