Turn your cables and extension cords into art instead of hiding them

This is the kind of thing you look at in magazines, admire for a second, and then never do…

But whatever, it’s still kind of cool.

The first one seems pretty doable. Long, orange extension cords are easy to come by.

But if you like the last one and want to try it yourself, you’re probably going to have to rewire your light. I don’t think they carry desk lamps with 30-foot cords at IKEA.

What do you think… Nifty but impractical idea? Or a project you’d actually consider spending some time on?

  1. This is useful. I’m not really into hanging pictures or posters and I’ve got wires bunched up behind my desk at home. These examples show designs using one cord… what about when you have 10+?

I won’t do this, but it’s not a bad idea!

    Also, vaccine arguments are intense…apparently.

  3. Anna Olson says:

clever. Hopefully whoever did this, doesn’t have kid’s that are young enough to play with them!

I actually think I’d do this. If you already have/use an extension cord in your home, it’s cheaper than actual wall art and something most people haven’t seen. I might give it a whirl tonight!

  5. Elana says:

hey, it is creative and looks better than the tangled mess ‘hidden’ behind tvs, computers, etc.

  6. Samantha Bee says:

I’ll gladly post pictures…Idk where. But I will!

Are you saying “cool” and “silly” are mutually exclusive? No way!

  8. Laurie says:

Hmmm. We’ve lived in our house several years and we still have orange “speaker wires” hanging from our wood ceilings… Artful? Maybe… Conversation starters… Yes. The same year we moved here, our 200 disc cd player was zapped by lightening and we have removed all discs, but have not invested in whole house system blah, blah, blah…
I wonder. Does this sound old school?

All this to ask, “Anyone have recommendations for whole house MUSIC system? I think I’d prefer no cords, yet how about a “band instrument motif” with extra cord length?

  9. That is a very neat idea! Way to be creative.

i think the bottom one would look cool with a mirror in the center

  11. what a nice Idea! So creative!

  12. Ally says:

I prefer to wrap my extra cording around one of my children and pin them to a wall. It’s a great way to get a little “me” time, and also a wonderful conversation starter, even if the conversation’s with protective services.

Nice idea in general but as a veteran cabeler from the olde days any decent system (computer, audio, or video) will change regularly as the technology advances and the cable-phile ages.

I once saw a photo of a computer communications center where every single patch lead was cable-tied in place every few meters. It looked beautiful… a work of art.

The first time there is a technical emergency that requires reconfiguration the diagonal cutters (“dikes”) have to come out and the time-to-recovery is lengthened.

We used to use garden twist-ties (steel wires encased in extruded plastic film). they were extremely cheap, came with built-in cutters on the pack and could be reused almost indefinitely.

Art is good and essential. “Form follows function” is also a good guide.

Now that is creative; especially the cords above the mantle.
