The Statue of Liberty — Then and Now

The Statue of Liberty was erected in 1886. Nowadays, about a dozen decades later, she’s green, because that’s what happens to copper, but she wasn’t originally, of course. Here’s one artist’s simulation of her original hue…

And for comparison…

Probably should be a bit more reddish… like a brand new penny.

  2. Evan says:

I wonder how long it took to change color.

My friend is color blind and in conversation I mentioned that the Statue of Liberty was green and he couldn’t believe it. He always thought it was just gray. I thought it was so weird that he lived 20 some years thinking that.

Pedantic point: The old torch had a bunch of iron strapping holding the torch together as it was lit from the inside: http://www.inetours.com/New_York/Images/Liberty/SoL_Torch_4116.jpg

  4. Tort says:

A shame really, as green makes her look fat.

Did you know that after the French gave us Lady Liberty, we had to wait about 5 months before putting her up? Took us that long to shave her armpit. Hey-oh!

  6. Elana says:

To bad it can`t be restored to the original and maintained – it is much more majestic originally. Did they make it knowing it would turn greenÉ

  7. Sheila says:

Can you imagine how it must have shine in the sun and new immigrants must have felt?

  8. ashley says:

I think I like her green.

  9. Dan says:

Even Lady Liberty is “going Green” these days!

ps. I wonder what the recycle value of the copper would be these days?

  10. d says:

For her 130th birthday they should give her a make over. Some Brasso Multi-Purpose Metal Polish and she would be back to her shiny copper self. That would be so awesome!

  11. Cheryl says:

    Is she green with envy????

  12. Cheryl says:

You would think we would keep her polished, she was a gift. Bright shinning copper would be stunning.

I remember when she was all covered with scaffolding for years and everyone thought they were going to restore her to her original color, but then the restoration was completed and – she looked exactly the same.

  14. me says:

If they kept her shiny, they would wear holes in the exterior “skin”, as the outer layer is less than the width of 2 pennies.
