Marge Simpson’s letter to Barbara Bush, 1990
Soon after The Simpsons debuted, People Magazine quoted Barbara Bush as saying it was one the stupidest things she’d ever seen. Here’s is Marge’s respectful response…
And here is Mrs. Bush’s response…
Dear Marge,
How kind of you to write. I’m glad you spoke your mind; I foolishly didn’t know you had one.
I am looking at a picture of you, depicted on a plastic cup, with your blue hair filled with pink birds peeking out all over. Evidently, you and your charming family — Lisa, Homer, Bart and Maggie — are camping out. It is a nice family scene. Clearly you are setting a good example for the rest of the country.
Please forgive a loose tongue.

I think George H. W. and Barbara have a great sense of humor. It’s great that she responded to a letter from Marge, and George thought the SNL skits about him were hilarious. It’s good to not take yourself too seriously.
H.W. even participated in one via satellite when Carvey was hosting.
Holy Cow! was this done on a typewriter?
Possibly, but remember that even in 1990 we had monospace and console fonts much like the one used for that letter.
Pffft. No way could Barbara Bush have written that letter; she has the sense of humor of moldy toast (just ask Al Franken.)
I’m sure it was done by an assistant. :P
Marge is a hell of a lot better mother than “beautiful mind” Barbara Bush.
