I saw this photograph online it struck a chord. Isn’t this what we all want in the storms of life? There would be nothing remarkable about the picture if it was one little bird braving the elements alone. You would just feel sorry for her. But this image inspires courage. In the excruciating moments of our lives, when the winds rage, comfort is a fleeting memory, your hope seems vain and survival is no longer certain: we need to huddle together. I don’t need to brave it alone, I need to ask others to hope alongside me. Many years ago, in a time of depression, I told a friend, ” I just don’t know if I can really believe that God is good anymore.” She replied, ” Why don’t you let me believe for you for awhile.” It sounds simplistic and a little corny, but those words have been a comfort to me so many times and I have been able to pass that gift on to others as well. I am immensely thankful that Christ, didn’t just believe it for me. He carried more anguish in one second than any of us will bear in a lifetime. When He asks us to walk through a storm, He is giving us the gift of sharing in the burden which made His joy complete.
Actually, this is a photo of naked self-interest at work.
The little birds sleep in a line for warmth. The poor sap on the end gets cold after a while, walks across the backs of its fellows and crams itself down into the center where it’s warmest. This, of course, leaves some other poor sap to be the guy on the end. If that bird isn’t strong enough or assertive enough to get into the center as often as the others, it will eventually freeze.
It’s not cooperation, it’s a constant low-grade struggle for limited resources.
The ultimate snuggles!!!

Beth, so true. Thank you for this reminder.

It reminds me of that Pixar short with the little black birds and the big blue bird.
