I’m a fat, 49-year-old woman, I’ve found that I get amazing service from younger male sales associates at any store, from Best Buy to Sears to Lowe’s to Cabela’s, when I wear my World of Warcraft t-shirts. If I’m wearing any other shirt, I’m almost invisible to everyone.
I was the managing partner of a comic/game/sports card store for 10 years and I have to say this might have rang true with me 20 years ago. My store had a high number of female customers. My wife, my employees wives and my female employees never seemed to have an issue like this. My store was also nominated by a local, female, college professor for a ‘Friends of Lulu- Female Friendly Recognition’ award. I don’t recall exactly what the nomination itself was called, but I appreciated the gesture.
Admittedly, in any niche hobby there are going to be a certain percentage of folks who are socially awkward. Heck, I’ve been to craft fairs where some of the feminist bead makers, etc could hardly talk to a man.
I have three daughters and we go to comic shops regularly. Geek girls from Marian Call to Team Unicorn rule the internet. Geeks in general rule pop culture. I think we can stop with the “Woe is me” mentality.
Have you considered that you might have got nominated for a ‘Friends of Lulu- Female Friendly Recognition’ award because your establishment’s a bit of a departure from the norm?
i think we can laugh at this… we laugh at big bang theory, right??? it’s an exaggeration and that’s funny…. people need to stop taking things so seriously! :)
Replace “comic book shop” with “table top gaming shop” and you have the truth up until about 0:09. On the upside, I get outstanding customer service.

This happens whenever I take my smoking’ hot wife into a GameStop with me.

I don’t get it. Is she seriously that self-conscious or something?
I know, right? She could just walk out with a pile of free comic books.
Kinda rude, don’t you think?
Really? And shes not even all that cute.
