Veiled woman holds her wounded son — World Press photo of the year

Last week World Press Photo announced this image by Samuel Aranda as their picture of the year for 2011…
The picture shows a woman holding her wounded son in her arms, inside a mosque used as a field hospital by demonstrators against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, during clashes in Sanaa, Yemen on 15 October 2011.
Samuel Aranda was working in Yemen on assignment for The New York Times.

andrew, you’re an ass.
?
I think it’s sad that he can’t be comforted by the face of his mother.
Is it not enough to be held in her loving embrace?
The first person we realise we can reach out to when times are at their hardest is our mother. This boy doesn’t need to see his mother’s face to find reassurance, her sympathetic and warm embrace is reassurance enough, like a mother lovingly and protectively cradling her baby.
