Senile, unresponsive old man comes alive when he hears his favorite music

The following is a beautiful clip from the new documentary Alive Inside, which…

…follows Dan Cohen as he discovers the power personalized music has to “awaken” minds closed by dementia and memory loss. The effect on the patient, the family, and the caregiver is both touching and inspiring. Each and every time it seems like magic.

Magic, indeed. Watch Henry not only hear his favorite music, but sing it too…and just try not to cry.

Oh good, glad someone saw that too. Beautiful story though…. Did I mention they were using iPods?

    • We tend to use “iPod” like Kleenex or Rollerblades in our house — a generic term for all MP3 players — so this didn’t come across as an advertorial to me at all…just an amazing look at the human mind!

Two mundane direct references to the iPod and one indirect reference to technology that isn’t even specific to iPods, and it’s an advertisement for Apple? I think you’ll be a lot happier if you stop being a cynical bastard and start being a happy bastard.

That is a beautiful story, as a musician myself I hope music plays an important role in my life every day for the rest of my life. :)

Great. Now I’m going to be compiling a playlist for my caretakers to play to me while I’m old, with minimal cognitive processes, just waiting to die.. This was amazing. I love old people, I hate how dismissive today’s youth is of their elders. They are a wonder we are ignoring in favor of the temporary.

I can definitely relate! Music played a big role in drawing me out of my depressions

Music is amazing. Babies who can’t speak or walk and can barely communicate react to music. My 15 month old daughter dances to all music– even if it’s from a passing car. I love thinking that it’s one of the first and last loves for people.
