Or, you can skip the controversy and just sign on the “your cure came from Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells” line.

  2. Pilot says:

Or, you could just stick to funny/interesting posts and leave politics out. Just a comment from someone who would refuse treatment for religious, moral and ideological reasons.

  3. Valerie says:

Probably what YUR said. Better results are coming through adult stem cell research. No harm, no foul, no questionable ethics (except for limited religious sects). That “other,” more controversial stem cell line of research is unnecessary.

  4. Squirrel says:

    KILLING UNBORN BABIES SAVES LIVES!!!1!!!1!

  5. baa says:

hahahahhahaha the religious nut jobs are going to have a field day with this one

  6. hard says:

My mom has a genetic eye disease her and her sister are both going blind they’re already most of the way there. Stem cell research claims to be the future treatment. I would never want to kill a baby or even create a life for “harvesting” but nobody’s doing that right? I mean aren’t the stem cells they use from babies who are already dead?

    • TheChristianHippie says:

      Nope.

They are typically collected from LIVING frozen embryos “left over” from fertility treatments. These embryos could be (and many have been) successfully adopted through the Snowflake programs, but instead are KILLED for their cells for wasteful and unfruitful stem cell research. All successful stem cell treatments we have today are derived from ADULT stem cells. These embryos are being HARVESTED and DYING for NOTHING.

Fetal cell lines for vaccine development and other medical research were collected from the tissues of aborted babies.

Babies KILLED in the womb for elective reasons, since diseased or chromosomally abnormal tissues are unusable for medical research. For example fetal cell line WI-38 which was used to create our Rubella vaccine; was developed from cells collected from the lungs of a three-month old unborn baby girl aborted simply because she was “one too many” in her family. Fetal cell line MRC-5, another common strain used in vaccine development is derived from the lung tissue of a 14-week old aborted boy whose reason for dying was his mothers “psychological health” wink wink nod nod.

The rubella virus clinically named RA273 (R=Rubella, A=Abortus, 27=27th fetus, 3=3rd tissue explant) was cultivated on the WI-38 aborted fetal cell line. A later research paper by Stanley Plotkin would reveal that 40 more babies were aborted after RA273 was successfully isolated, with virus strains taken from 34 of them. This means a total of over 80 separate, elective abortions recorded were involved in the research and final production of the present day rubella vaccine: 21 from the original WI-1 through WI-26 fetal cell lines that failed, plus WI-38 itself, plus 67 from the attempts to isolate the rubella virus.

Yes there are many many medical “treatments” being created from and experiments being done on babies intentionally killed. Many are even intentionally created for the express purpose of being killed and harvested for research and development. :(

      • Emil says:

Harvested? Like the little sisters in BioShock are being harvested for their ADAM? xD
        (Beware of the troll!!) :DD

      • cactusren says:

It’s not like researchers convince unwilling women to abort an embryo or fetus just so they can get the tissues. Abortion is legal in this country, and it happens. What’s wrong with making use of cells from an embryo/fetus that was aborted anyway? (As long as the woman consents to this.) At least then something good can come out of the situation. Like vaccines that save the lives of children.

“Many [babies] are even intentionally created for the express purpose of being killed and harvested for research and development.” Citation needed.

  7. TheChristianHippie says:

I wish they WOULD be so forthcoming with where exactly our “treatments” come from! I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to refuse for religious, moral and ideological reasons not to mention SCIENTIFIC and economic reasons too.

ADULT stem cells have yielded successful treatments for 73 diseases/conditions and counting, while embryonic stem cells…… *crickets* ALL trials with ESC have resulted in tumors and cancers in the test subjects. ESC research is a waste of time, money, resources, and LIVES.

Also God is quite clear on His stance on LIFE. I would refuse ESC treatments even if they somehow did result in a cure. I would rather die, for what profit is it to gain the whole world and lose my soul?? Mat. 16:26

    • Maxine says:

Have you refused the immunizations you mentioned above for yourself or your children, if you’re a parent?

    • John says:

God is quite clear on His stance on LIFE.

Yup, He is. Specifically, He says it starts at first breath, and that causing a pregnant woman to not be pregnant is only a crime if it happens by accident while two men are fighting with each other, AND that it carries a much less harsh penalty than murder.

God’s position on the matter is abundantly clear.

So: why do you disagree with God? Why do you think God is wrong?

  8. AStev says:

Misleading cartoon… people don’t have an issue with stem cells per se; they have an issue with harvesting *embryonic* stem cells, killing the embryo in the process. People who blur this distinction do so because they know their position is indefensible.

  9. jp says:

actually, no they’re not. sadly enough. they do use babies that have died, but often times, they don’t.

  10. trskms says:

There have been ZERO medical advances due to embryonic stem cells. ZERO. All advances have come from adult stem cells, which are not controversial and hurt no one.

It’s too bad that a funny site had to go all political and negative. :-(

    • Emily says:

I don’t think Abraham is using the comic to promote embryonic stem cell research. I think the purpose of the comic is to point out how many people are against certain ethical issues until it directly affects them.

  11. Beth says:

It’s Abraham’s site. He can put whatever he wants on here. Kudos, Abraham, for the often entertaining, sometimes thought provoking posts.

I advise those who don’t like it to get away from the computer and do something relaxing. Arguing about stem cell research on the comments section of a blog will amount to nothing.

  12. Ben says:

    Godwin’s law, blah blah blah.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_human_experimentation

Well. They produced data that is still in use today. This cartoon is making no further claim for a qualification for the ethical collection of medical data.

The cartoon is pathetic. Its attempt at a slam dunk of a controversial position fell short and it ended up just pissing off a ton of people who are convinced of the radical idea that unborn people are people.
