Great Grey Owls are actually tiny under their feathers

This taxidermied Great Grey Owl at the Zoological Museum, Copenhagen compares the bird’s apparent size with its actual body mass, showing that most of what makes it “Great” is plumage.

And apparently are made of bubblegum.
You, sir, just made me laugh out loud. And I needed that. Thank you!

They really look like a buzzard underneath.
having had an owl land on my hand, what you don’t realise is how light they really are, it’s not just the size of the plumage, but their bones are evolved to be lighter too by being hollow – it’s something you just don’t expect when something that large lands on your hand/arm
That grosses me out in a way I can’t explain.
All owls are.
