What does a product have to do to get 5 stars around here?!

I’m trying to picture this reviewer’s thought process…
Without this product my son would be dead. Not Bad.
On the other hand, it only saved one life, which is negligible in the grand scheme of things.
Aww, heck, I’m feeling generous — 4 stars.

Wow, can’t give the 5th star for saving son’s life. “Not bad”. Methinks it;s not the product she’s feeling generous with, as it’s her love for her son. Poor son.
Maybe the son has been in getting in a lot of trouble recently.
To be fair, if the product is not top quality (4/5) and it doesn’t look that great (4/5) then the final rating will be 4/5…. By reading the review, its clear that the product works, but it might not be the best one out there.
Maybe the inconvenience of the alarm going off justified the slight, in her mind. I see she only liked the appearance 4 stars worth, but who would quibble with that, from a life saving device? As for the quality – did the thing run through batteries or something? Or, was this the deluxe model with bacon scented wake up alarm? Because I’d be bummed if I ordered a bacon wake up alarm and the bacon feature didn’t work. Still, I might be able to overlook that tragedy if it saved my house and – oh yeah – my CHILD.
I understand your reasoning, but consider it this way. The review is about the product and that includes more than just “it works right” but also how well its made and how it looks, (and probably also durability and value).
Think of it like this:
A really cheap car can get you from point A to point B but, when you get in an accident, the airbags work and save your life. The car does what it claims-moves you around, protects you in an accident.
Does this mean this car is 5 star quality material? No. For cars, you’d rate it on other features, how it looks, etc etc. Same thing here. Those other features are what gives it the 4/5.
The fact that it works properly is important, but doesn’t mean its a 5 star product.
Do you do stand-up as well Patrick?
I would have to agree with the four star rating. Just because it goes off when it detects CO doesn’t mean it’s the best product. It would be like giving my car five stars just because I can pass somebody.
Quote “Without this product my son would be dead. Not Bad.”
Are people really this stupid…?
If it works and it saved my sons life it would get 6 stars…!!!!!!!
It should be noted that the “Not bad” comment is only what the original blogger wrote, not necessarily what the reviewer was actually thinking/feeling. And it’s satirical.
Maybe it’s a fake review. Since the story is pretty amazing but still believable, they didn’t want to “give themselves away” by having an overly effusive review/rating. But by putting a four-star review alongside that story, they ended up overcompensating.
