Blue Jays baseballer ejected for throwing his helmet at the ump
Brett Lawrie of the Toronto Blue Jays let his temper get the best of him after the ump called a couple strikes that Lawrie was fairly certain should have been balls…
Updated with a better video of the incident (with bonus footage of a fan throwing beer at the ump)…

Actually the title of the post is wrong. If you look at 1:24 Lawrie is ejected before having thrown his helmet. The helmet hitting the umpire was a bonus.
Ha! You’re right. A bonus, indeed… :)
Eric Gregg’s birthday is coming up on Friday — perhaps the ump was paying tribute to him.
clearly a ball…
can you hear the cheer from the crowd beginning at 1:02? Ha ha!
HAHA awesome. I bet on this game that the rays would win…i love stupid egotistical umps.
It was clearly a strike… j/k
Wow. Bad call, but over-react much?
Interesting that you can clearly hear the crowd yelling “BS.” You’d think someone would have maybe turned down the crowd mics. Can the TV station get in trouble/fined for this from the FCC? Just wondering.
Too bad that the video doesn’t show through to the end of the game where the Miller is given a police escort off the field and a fan tosses a beer at Miller. I’d hate to be that fan though, as I’m sure he probably is facing some sort of charges now, or is at least banned from the ballpark for a good long time.
I like being able to lip-read in these situations… ;)
@CDN Phi: What kind of do they serve? Miller Lite?
As a baseball fan it makes me angry to watch plays like this. The umpires have been absolutely ridiculous lately about making bad calls for ALL teams but because of their snazzy little union and baseballs refusal to come into the 21st century and allow reviews on calls, there’s not much that can be done about it. Bottom of the 9th down by one, that could have very well been a game changing call and considering the how well the Rays and Jays have been playing I would have been furious too.
The thing is that the baseball season is so damn long that loosing 1 game to bad call this time of year is practically irrelevant.
It’s foolish that a man is going to be punished for disrespecting a man with no integrity. That umpire should get suspended too- for making a terrible call just to spite a player, and consequently, his team.
i bet if they let ladies be the umpires instead of men, the players nor coaches would react that way to what they feel are bad calls! we could totally change every single game, let it go the way we want! based off of prettiest uniform, strongest guys, most fun city, etc.!!!!! bruhahahahahahahaha! :)
What the crap are you talking about?
Wow. Those two calls were TERRIBLE. It’s too bad no one has the authority to throw the ump out of the game.
Check out this video to see the fan hurl a beer at the ump as he walked off the field after the game.
Neither Lawrie’s or the fan’s actions were deserved. That said, those were 2 awful calls. I umpired for long enough to know there’s just no excuse for those calls, especially at the Major League level. The umpire deserves a suspension (or needs to give an apology at a minimum) if MLB expects fans to think there’s any integrity both ways here.
Man…people are so immature around sports… It’s like…. Whoa…grow up. Not so much to the players, cause they’re really emotionally and intellectually set on winning and playing well, but much more towards the fans; if your team loses a game, you don’t have to freak out about it… I love sports, but the fans make me hate it.
