Hippo getting its teeth brushed with the world’s biggest toothbrush
Hippos in captivity (at least the ones at the Shanghai Zoo) have a different diet than hippos in the wild. In the wild, hippos eat grasses that don’t lodge in their mouths. But the fruits and veggies the hippos consume in the zoo get stuck in their teeth.
Zookeepers perform oral hygiene for the animals 3 times a week. They used to use a regular broom, but in 2010 they invented a what looks like an ordinary toothbrush for the hippos — except it’s 4 feet long.
