People with the guts to stand near elephant seals [12 pictures]

Elephant Seals (it’s no surprise) are massive. The largest bulls are about 16 feet long and weigh 6,600 pounds. But stats like that are just numbers until you see some size comparisons.

So here are a bunch of pics of people who are brave enough to be close to these gargantuan creatures…

Let’s hope these people know what they’re doing. For the rest of us, it remains prudent to obey this common-sensical sign…

    When I was a kid, we used to be able to go to Ano Nuevo and walk right up to them. Now they have guided tours and you can hardly get within photo distance. I guess too many people tried to pet them, so now no one gets to enjoy them any more.

      San Simeon? True, it also has fences. But the beaches are narrow, so they’re always close.

      I once walked within 10′ of one at a beach near Año Nuevo; I thought it was a downed tree. Needless to say, I moved on…
