Blobfish — A rare and absolutely nasty sea creature [4 pictures]

From Wikipedia

The blobfish is a deep sea fish…[i]nhabiting the deep waters off the coasts of mainland Australia and Tasmania, it is rarely seen by humans.

Blobfish live at depths between 600–1,200 m (2,000–3,900 ft) where the pressure is several dozen times higher than at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient for maintaining buoyancy.

Instead, the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming.

  1. Jennifer Weston says:

Interesting creature, but I don’t see why you call it ‘nasty’. This gelatinous fish is obviously well adapted to it’s demanding environment; if we find the results esthetically unpleasing, that’s our problem.

  2. Wim Savels says:

Makes me think of Mr. Saturn.

  3. But how does it taste ?

  4. Steven Best says:

So what do they do with it? Eat it?

  5. Steven Best says:

Read the wiki article! No one said anything about it going extinct! How sad :/

  6. Maggie says:

I still don’t feel politically incorrect by saying it does make me want to throw up a little.

  7. Casey says:

Don’t be such a sourpuss, Mr. Blobfish. Turn that frown upside down [...and lose some weight, you've let yourself go]!

  8. Mark says:

It looks kinda like one of those underworld dwellers in the BBC’s film version of “The Silver Chair.”

  9. Mark, I thought the same thing. Though I attributed the look to Pauline Baynes, the original Narnia illustrator. But maybe I’m remembering that production.

  10. Well, their facial expression is reminiscent of how people start to look like as the autumn gets darker and darker.

  11. Jon says:

Looks like the most appropriately named creature I have ever seen.

  12. Viola Ward says:

I wonder if it looks any different when it is in it’s own environment. Maybe it likes being under pressure. Maybe it is frowning because it wants to go back home where it can smile!!!☺ It is amazing how much it’s face looks so human!!!

  13. T. Puodunizas says:

You guys are disgusting like seriously!!!!! Some people have the nerve of making fun of a cute little fish!!! :(

  14. Chris says:

Do you get the impression that God was like, “Well, that didn’t turn out as I expected. I’ll just hid it in the depths of the ocean. No one will find it there.”
