3 Princeton sophomores pose after a brutal, rock-laced snowball fight, 1893
In this unhappy photograph from 1893, three members of Princeton’s class of 1895 show off their battered faces after participating in the erstwhile tradition of a yearly freshman/sophomore snowball fight…

Their appearance serves as some evidence that the teams’ snowball recipe may have included some slightly less benign ingredients than the pure, fresh-fallen snow.
I couldn’t find the story of this particular fight, but here’s how the New York Times recounted the previous year’s showdown on January 13, 1892…

Repeated blows to the face from compact, pure fresh-fallen snow, are easily capable of this.
Well, if you read it, you’d see that they were snowballs with *rocks* in them.
Well, if you had read it, you’d see that that was an assumption, which I was pointing out is not necessary.
I’ve seen blood and bruises on more than one occasion from clearly rock free snow balls. I myself have ended up with some pretty raw skin in my more carefree youthful days.
The photo and the news article are from different years.

The author made the year difference clear!
Is that Daniel Craig on the right?
Yes, yes it is…
No no no no. Thats not Daniel Craig. That’s Tom Hardy!
Yes, absolutely, Tom Hardy! That guy has been working hard for his big break.
yes! I thought the exact same thing.
The writing is excellent. If news articles, local and otherwise, were like that today, they’d be worth reading.
I don’t know about Daniel Craig but that’s Edward Norton on the left!
Incredible points. Sound arguments. Keep up the good work.
Had a friend who was a college baseball pitcher and when he packed a tight snowball (aka iceball), I believe he could do this to your face. I never got hit with one but the first time I FELT one go past my head (I’ll never forget the “WIZZ” sound it made), I threw up my hands and said, “You win”.
This photo is from an after- football game. My grandfather Phil King Sr is on the right. Another is Johnny Poe, dont remember the third. I have a news clipping dated 1925, stating the photo was of football. Thats pre-helmet days, from the old Washington Times, I think, and article describing the game. Its no snowball fight. PK Sr is in Natl Football Hall of Fame.
