The Brighton Swimming Club in their skimpy suits and top hats, late 1800′s

This picture was taken sometime in the years following the inception of the Brighton Swimming Club in 1860. The circumstances surrounding the photo apparently weren’t noticeable enough to warrant a mention in the club’s minutes, so a specific date is unknown. I’m choosing to believe that this is how they always hung out.

I especially appreciate the guy just to the right of center, who not only went full-on diaper where swimwear was concerned, but is also sporting a pipe. It’s almost too classy.

I’m not sure if this is classic or disturbing. Maybe it’s a mixture of both.

Some of these guys are a little too, um, “out there”, like the two on the far left. Ew.

  4. I’m glad you showed the close-up. At first, I thought “sporting a pipe” was a euphemism.

Notable is the fact that every guy is lean. Times have changed.
