The graphic is a little confusing. It surely can’t be saying that 100% of the movies made in the last 40 years or so are Science Fiction? Also, the beige graphic (2nd from bottom) does not seem to have a match, unless it is the ‘Drama’, which is closer to the ‘Action’ color. I know I’m going to be the only one posts about how this is troublesome.
The total vertically equals 100% of movies made that year. The size of each colored band shows how much of the 100% is comprised of that sort of movie. :-)
1. Where was this data collected? Does it include independent films or is it only major film distributors? Is this US market only, or is this worldwide?
When you click to enlarge it states a UK site as the resource. Also, musicals are completely left out. This seems very inaccurate. It would be intersting to see an accurate graph of worldwide stats, all genres included.
Is this available anywhere as a spreadsheet. I think the numbers by year/cat would be interesting to see, plus this chart is a bit hard to read..
Click on the picture and it enlarges it.

Your cleverness will be remembered throughout the ages.
It already is, but this incident merely adds to the legend. ;-)
Touché
I feel both foolish and genius, you the people can decide!
The entire chart is in order, but you start from the last one (“Short”,) and work your way up :) No more color confusion!
Clears it right up! And obvious! Well done, thanks.
Where are you getting your numbers from? I think Porn should be bigger and start sooner.
Obviously, the decrease in the number of westerns led to the increase in number of porn films……:)

2. I’m sad westerns died out.

No porn until 68, but then it really blew up in the 90′s
