Actually, he intended to dodge the throw with his jump. If you look closely at the other guy, he was throwing the ball when he started to jump, so he couldn’t change anything. Of course, he wanted to look cool by doing so, in which he succeeded, as I would say ;-)
And trust in himself? Sure, because he did it hundreds of times before. You don’t do this kind of stuff w/o training it. He probably does either parcour or some martial arts.

If I could have done that, high school would have been a lot different for me…
If he had done that, but without the celebration and hi-fives afterward, his cool factor would have gone up 1000%.
